Following sold out engagements at 54 Below, The Triad NYC, United Solo Festival, Barrington Stage Company (Tony Award-winning William Finn’s Cabaret Series) and a nationwide tour from Washington D.C. to Hawaii, the captivating Amy Oestreicher presents Passageways: Songs of Connection, Abnormal & Sublime. An adventurous multimedia journey of original song, art, story and humor as an unexpected passageway through crisis to home, Passageways is written performed, composed, and with mixed media art created by Amy Oestreicher (Gutless and Grateful at 54 Below, RAINN & TEDx Talks) with musical direction and arrangements by Bob Goldstone and direction by Shellen Lubin.

Performances of this new theatrical event will coincide with the launch of Amy Oestreicher’s new book My Beautiful Detour (Singing Tree Publishing, 2019), and a talk-back and book-signing will be held after each performance.

Passageways is an original multimedia fantastical one-woman musical theatre piece, with almost all elements created by the performer. Through art, music, humor, and a deep love of nature, a young woman with a wild passion for life and self-discovery forms a bold, new identity in spite of relentless adversity. Through the piece, she discovers that “home” cannot be re-found, but must be re-imagined as we are liberated through the creative telling and sharing of our stories. This unique theatrical experience is a compelling and uplifting journey through the physical and emotional repairs on the path to recovery, as the creativity of the artist is itself the passageway through profound crisis. There's no way in, no way out, only through. So why not laugh, dance and paint our way towards the light?

#yourmemorial is a play about what we choose to remember, what we refuse to see, and what it means to be real in the Facebook age. Lottie has always been that all-star student who's everyone's best friend. Fresh out of college, she's determined to change the world and make a difference. But when she's killed at her internship in Afghanistan, the Internet threatens to tear her memory apart. As fangirls, rubberneckers, pseudo-friends, trolls and her own social media fuel the digital storm, Lottie's friends will struggle over how and who gets to tell her story, and what her legacy should be. 

 

Written by EMILY J. DALY, #yourmemorial features a cast of MEREDITH STARKMAN, SASHA LAZARE, JOHN DEWEY*, and ESMERALDA GARZA. Emily J. Daly is a writer and actor from up the Hudson River and now based in NYC. Her production credits include the Middle Voice / Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Stable Cable Lab Company, Capital Fringe Festival, foolsFURY Factory Parts Festival, Rhinofest, and New Perspectives Theatre Company. Her development credits include the Great Plains Theater Conference, ESPA Drills residency program, Primary Stages, Red Caravan, and Pu$$yFest. Screenwriting credits include the award-winning pilot Sox News (Martian Media), web series Kate Plus Date (Martian Media), and series made exclusively for Instagram Sparkle Ultraviolet (Instaminseries). Emily is a member of Middle Voiceand was in the Gingold Theatrical Group's inaugural SPEAKERS' CORNER (2017-18). Emily Lyon is an award winning Brooklyn-based director and dramaturg. Her New York credits include: Mary Stuart (Access Theatre), How We Hear (LPAC, The Brick), The Summoning (sheNYC: Best Direction, Best Production), Sword & the Stone/The Tempest tour (Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival), The Secret in the Wings (Access Theatre), A Taste of Shakespeare (Hedgepig Ensemble), Women of Williams County (MITF: Best Ensemble), Tennessee Williams' Interior: Panic (FringeNYC), The Arsonists (DCTV Firehouse), Some of the Side Effects (United Solo: Best Premiere), As You Like It (Geva Theatre Directing Fellow). She has assisted Rebecca Taichman at The Old Globe, Michael Greif with text work for Shakespeare in the Park, Rachel Chavkin on a workshop of a Dan LaFranc play at Yale Rep, Robert Richmond at The Folger, Billy Clark and Jason Trucco at LaMama, Eric Tucker on a new play at 59E59, Michael Sexton at The Pearl, and Sir Michael Boyd and Gregory Doran for two Royal Shakespeare Company residencies. Her dramaturgy work includes Black Doves by Reynaldo Piniella, Advent by Montgomery Sutton, and Persuasion by Sarah Rose Kearns. As Literary Manager of BEDLAM, she created MadLAB: A Reading for Directors which benefited 35 artists, and was dramaturg for Kate Hamill's Sense & Sensibility, now one of the most-produced plays in the country. Justin Cimino is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Pigeonholed. He teaches Clowning as part of Pigeonholed's Education Wing. As an actor, he has performed Off-Broadway and in many other productions in NYC. He has workshopped solo work under Austin Pendleton at The Directors Company. He has been a teaching artist for 15 years. He is currently the Education Director and Operations Manager for Zara Aina, a nonprofit organization that brings theater to at-risk communities in Madagascar and the United States. Justin has directed and taught clowning and the devised "moment work" of the Tectonic Theater Project at NYU Tisch, Columbia University, the Studio/NY, and The Public's Shakespeare Initiative. Justin directed Pigeonholed's all-female production of Mary Stuart in the fall of 2018. Recently Justin devised, wrote, and directed documentary theater pieces about a Jackson Heights hoarder, a triple amputee who runs a Hospice Center, and a 90-year-old woman who used to hunt Nazis. In the spring of 2019, Justin received a SU-CASA grant from the Queens Council on the Arts to build an original piece of theater with senior citizens in Queens.

Esmeralda Garza, originally from south Texas, makes her New York City debut. Esmeralda was last seen in The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' productions of The Wolves and Evita along with Romeo and Juliet at the Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis.

 

Sasha Lazare: Pigeonholed shows include the title role in Mary Stuart, Detroit (Sharon), and Not Clown (Linda). Other favorites include Two Gentlemen of Verona (Julia), Gruesome Playground Injuries (Kayleen), and As You Like It (Phebe). Meredith Starkman is an actor, writer, and voiceover artist living in Harlem. Before settling in New York, she worked in Mumbai, India facilitating performing arts workshops in prisons and public housing developments. Currently, she teaches a drama and writing workshop to incarcerated women in Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. Sheila O’Connor is in trouble. She has been drinking too much lately at her favorite pub, The Dublin Rose, and has become a danger to herself. When her worried grandson arrives, determined to re-locate her from her beloved Richmond Hill, Queens to an assisted living community in New Jersey, the battle lines are drawn. Over the course of one tumultuous vodka-fueled evening filled with Irish magic and long-buried secrets, Sheila will learn to overcome her fears and finally find the courage to face the next chapter.

MEDICINE THE MUSICAL, a new musical written by Michael Ehrenreich and directed by Joey Murray, will have a limited engagement run from Saturday, November 3rd thru Sunday, November 18th at HERE Arts Center (145 Sixth Ave), in the Mainstage Theater. MEDICINE THE MUSICAL follows a group of first year medical students as they tenaciously fight their way through a grueling first year, grappling with their lives, loves, and the rigors of an education in medicine. The production features original music with lyrics and composition by the playwright and musical direction by Nick Wilders. SUDDENLY is a new play adapted from the 1954 film of the same name, starring Frank Sinatra, about an attempted presidential assassination that rocks a quiet town in northern California. When the Bensons’ home is placed on lockdown after local law enforcement learns of a potential threat to the president's passage through the nearby train station, it soon becomes very clear that nothing is as it appears. Set against a post-war backdrop but staged with contemporary urgency, this intense political thriller explores a particularly American culture of violence.

Inspired by a true, bittersweet love story of one band's artistic triumph via technology and music, Greencard Wedding is part rock concert, part Skype film featuring notable locations in the New York indie rock scene. This multi-media indie rock musical speaks to how we define ourselves as artists, the politics of immigration, and artist visa regulations. Performed in English and some Gaelic. Wedding cake served to all audience members.

AMP is a multi-media solo horror piece about scientist Luigi Galvani's discovery of animal electricity in 1790 and how it informed the creation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as well as the development of electroshock therapy in the 1950's.

 

In AMP, Mary Shelley begins the process of writing Frankenstein on stage. Mary's monologues are interwoven with film interviews of a woman who auditions for the Boston Symphony during their first historic "blind auditions" and is committed to an asylum.

 

AMP will feature sound and projection design by Martha Goode, with video and still photos shot on location inside abandoned asylums on the East Coast. Additional text is from the writings of Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, William Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Luigi Galvani. AMP will also feature the voices of J.Stephen Brantley (NYIT 2017 Doric Wilson Independent Playwright Award; Difficult People on Hulu) as famed philosopher (and Mary Shelley's father) William Godwin, Chloe Dirksen as the architect of modern feminism, (and Mary Shelley’s mother) Mary Wollstoncraft, Ryan McCurdy as Percy Shelley, and Jonathan West as Lord Byron with the help of Dialect Coach Chloe Dirksen.

 

AMP was previously developed through residencies at Write Out Front and All For One Theater. For the play AMP, Jody Christopherson is the recipient of a 2017 New York Society Library grant, for emerging female writers writing about history and literature. AMP will run in rep with Greencard Wedding, which stars Jody Christopherson and Ryan McCurdy.

Inspired by speculative fiction and neo-noir, The Flatiron Hex is a peek inside a parallel world infected with intelligent viruses and paranoia. Set in NYORG, a city in the middle of a swamp, and told through puppets, The Flatiron Hex is the story of Wylie Walker, a contract shaman, who uses his unusual talents to troubleshoot and maintain NYORG’s interweb biotechnology.

 

Elements of the fantastic collide with the everyday to become evocative of a magical reality. Due to the haunted land and sentient mainframes, Wylie faces many occult adversaries. Storms constantly threaten to destroy NYORG, but a secret feature of the Flatiron building keeps the storms at bay, as long as the cloud-code is cracked and the correct ritual procedure is followed. Resulting in a blood-soaked comedic quest of redemption and sacrifice.

BLURRED LINES is a newly devised theatre piece that reveals the powerful and insidious role rape culture plays in campus sexual assault and all forms of sexual abuse. While calling for a shift in awareness, Blurred Lines challenges the audience by asking: How do we define consent? No means no. Yes means yes. Silence means…? Who decides?  Who do you believe? These questions all too often are dismissed or ignored, made light of and blurred in our culture, in our laws and with each other. BLURRED LINES draws attention to how young women navigate and survive in a world where 1 In 5 college women are raped or sexually assaulted.

Based on researched experiences by the cast, this ensemble theatre performance is written and performed by Girl Be Heard company members Gabriela Carrera, Maria Diez, Allison Lee Flom, Ray Johnson, Jesse Krebs, Me’Khai Lewis, Jewel Phillips, and Lise Wedemeyer. The production will be directed by Girl Be Heard 2010 Alumni Tiff Roma in partnership with Artistic Director Kim Sykes and producer Jessica Greer Morris, with Art Design by Mark Fina, Lighting and Multimedia Design by Jason Fok, Set Design by Rebecca Kleinman, Musical Contribution by Jai “Bush Tea” Raphael and Ray Johnson, Choreography by Ian Fields Stewart, and Costume Design by Laura Wynne. Bob believes he is the Joker Henchman from the '89 Batman, Bob The Goon, and no one in his PTSD therapy group can convince him otherwise. The reason--the veterans in this special group also believe they are, or were, third tier comic book characters--the less heroic and most obscure. All begins to unravel when an ex-pilot, Langly, joins despite her belief that she is from the anime world, not a comic.

Gorey centers on the enigmatic and endearing artist at different stages of his life and spans 50 years from young adulthood to shortly before his death. This bold new play is an introspective study that fuses fact and fiction using lush projections and inventive storytelling. A world premiere mistaken-identity comedy written by playwright/comedian Matt Moses. Wes Grantom (Eager to Lose, The Steadfast) directs a cast of four including Teddy Bergman (B’way: Peter and the Starcatcher, Off-B’way: Sex Lives of Our Parents), Ryan King (Now Or Later at Huntington Theatre, The Intelligent Design Of Jenny Chow at the Atlantic Theater Company), Polly Lee (Marie Antoinette at Yale Rep, Wasps at Studio 42), and Emily Walton (Eager to LoseAugust: Osage County).

Four people get lost in the forest of social media in this raucous farce exploring changing notions of privacy and intimacy in this age of over-sharing. Written by improv and Comedy Central vet Matt Moses (Daniella Uses Dirty Words, UCB's "The Law Firm"), The Cloud fuses the wilds of the internet with Shakespearean romance to conjure a theatrical landscape in which all the www is a stage. 

In The Cloud, Chris, a set designer, is gunning for a job designing a major production of As You Like It. His girlfriend Katie is an app designer who gets her first big break with a very revealing app called “Show Me Yours.” Enter Katie’s ex-boyfriend, Greg, a personal trainer who’s ready to end his philandering and get married, and Greg’s client Sandy, a career-obsessed costume designer who decides to spice things up by having a fling with a younger man.

In the heyday of the American drama, the forefathers of realism were seeking to create a new form of story-telling in which characters could be plucked from the everyday humdrum of reality, and the actors portraying could pass for your neighbor or your brother or the man seated next to you. Tired of the melodramatic flare, these artists were working together to rebel against the established norm by experimenting with the unknown and reveling in the process of development and creation.

More than half a century later, Theater Reconstruction Ensemble has assembled a group of eight men struggling to create their own process of theatrical story-telling, following in their forefathers' footsteps - examining their greatest works and challenging their most legendary of methods. By looking to the past, we have created a new piece of theater - a patchwork of style, drama, realism and what lies beyond - that pushes the boundaries of our now-established norms of playwriting and theater-making. We are continuing their experiment by exploring our own process and venturing ourselves into the great unknown.

Theater Reconstruction Ensemble presents SALESMEN: a meditation on masculinity and the American REAL a world premiere piece conceived and directed by John Kurzynowski and developed by the company. Show Summary: Led by his subconscious (a bikini clad chorus), our "Hero", an out of shape playwright --- heads to the gym for the first time to conquer his writer’s block and attract his muse. As he ventures off to find the perfect gym, he is subjected to a host of obstacles including a receptionist who mocks him, a gym manager who insists on a urine test and oddities in the locker room. Can coming face-to- face with some of his worst fears ultimately lead him to inspiration?

The creator of the project, Adyana de la Torre is also a personal trainer and fitness instructor in NYC. She has been featured in such fitness videos as Beachbody’s Brazil Butt Lift, Blood Type Workout, Es- cape Your Shape, Cardio Karate, Extreme Urban Rebounding and more. Comedy Of Sorrows  | Open: 08/21/13 Close: 08/25/13
The U.S. Premiere of one of the first pieces of Egyptian theatre to emerge from the Egyptian uprising.

Comedy of Sorrows (Commedia Al-Ahzaan) follows a young university-educated Egyptian woman who, through a series of encounters with different members of society, comes to realize that she had been oblivious to the poverty and misery of her fellow Egyptians. The play presents a collective and unsentimental account of a nation’s awakening. Through a unique combination of vivid poetry and colloquial dialogue, it celebrates the uprising of a people, while at the same time anticipating the uncertainty and tumult of a nation struggling to transition to democracy.

First performed in July, 2011 at Cairo’s Al-Ghad Theatre, Comedy of Sorrows won accolades from some of Egypt’s most influential critics and scholars. In her review for Al-Ahram newspaper, professor and critic Nehad Seleiha called the play an “emotionally poignant and aesthetically cathartic theatrical experience.” Poet and critic Girgus Shukry wrote in the Journal of Radio and Television that while “we may agree or disagree with [El-Husseini’s] method of treatment, no one will dispute the fact that we are witnessing a major creative work… in which the author chooses to ask questions rather than offer ready-made answers.”

The English translation of Comedy of Sorrows was commissioned and presented by the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University in collaboration with Vanderbilt University and the Martin E. Segal Theater Center at the City University of New York.

 Back by popular demand, Julien Schwab’s critically acclaimed, mind-bending comedy rogerandtom will move to the Main Stage at the HERE (145 Sixth Avenue, enter on Dominick) for an extended summer engagement beginning Saturday, July 6th.  Presented by Personal Space Theatrics, rogerandtom is set to open Saturday, July 13th and will continue for a limited run through Saturday, August 24th. rogerandtom is a comedy about a man who has come to see the same show that the audience has, only to find out that he's actually a member of the cast. Much like an episode of the Twilight Zone the show’s only boundaries are between imagination and infinity. The play uses a twist to challenge the conventions of theatre while raising a series of profound questions about the role of theatre in theatre itself.

Joseph Chaikin called the play he created with Sam Shepard "...common poems of real and imagined moments in the spell of love."  This Dance/Theater version of Savage/Love (no relation to Dan Savage) is De Facto Dance's first “set play”.  Previous De Facto work focuses on choreographic structures that generate improvised dance/theater. De Facto brings a spirit of "improvisational remix" to Savage/Love.  Music, movement, and movies reframe the collaborative, crystalline poems of Shepard and Chaikin.  The result ranges from the poignant to the sublime to the violent to the ridiculous.

Like De Facto's previous works, Savage/Love is ironic, but it uses irony to get closer to emotional truth, rather than to sidestep it.  Simple, raw, intimate, immediate, ironic, incomplete, the play inhabits a world in which savages and innocents struggle to locate themselves and their lovers, and to put together the codes and keywords of trust, communion and desire. De Facto's remix is a true marriage of movement and theater. The rehearsal process, like love itself, has encouraged artists on both ends of the dance-theater training spectrum to surrender habits and defaults to match the practices of the other.

About the Company: De Facto Dance

DE FACTO DANCE is a New York City based performance company with collaborators in many parts of the United States including Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Los Angeles. For the majority of De Facto’s work, there is little pre-choreographed or memorized movement and text. Their pieces ask the performers to be radically attuned to what is going on in real time and space. De Facto’s movement technique draws from dance forms like modern dance, contact improvisation, ballet and release technique, and from principles of alignment from Yoga and Alexander Technique. De Facto believes that choreographic improvisation can be learned by anyone interested in exploring full-bodied pedestrian movement. That is, they explore the richness and nuance within movement “regular” people do all day every day relishing and exploring the depth of experience that can be felt in the small changes in posture / gesture / gait of every-day life. De Facto Dance includes a cast of 10-15 performers, with a consistent core of choreographers and directors who include Kelly Donovan, Meg Fry and George Russell.

The Deconstructive Theatre Project is a seven-year-old not-for-profit ensemble performance laboratory that exists to devise and premiere new multidisciplinary work. Serbian playwright Jelena Kajgo (Director, Bitef Festival and Theatre) presents a super-charged, hyper-real world where five people – a psychiatrist locked in a love triangle with two of his patients, and another super successful couple -- struggle with modernity, money and power in a newly fashioned capitalist culture.  Whether it’s romance or a job, everything is up for grabs and usually goes to the highest bidder. Realists skewers American-style capitalism and its encroachment on Serbian daily life amidst the global financial crisis. The characters in Realists feel the sting of a changing worldwide economy, and the uncertainty of a society losing its traditional footing.


This world premiere production of Realists will feature two of Serbia's most popular actors -- Uliks Fehmiu and Jelena Stupljanin -- alongside some of America's best talent -- Kevin Hogan (Impossible Marriage with Holly Hunter), Sean Meehan (Mourning Becomes Electra, The New Group) and Samantha Soule (Dinner at Eight, Lincoln Center).

Gravy  | Open: 03/01/13 Close: 03/01/13
 Gravy, written and directed by Dana Tarantino, will be presented on March 1st at the Here Performing Arts Center where it’s been selected as a finalist for the 11th Annual Downtown Urban Festival. The cast includes Debra Toscano and Tony Chirolde (“In The Heights”).

Gravy is subtitled “A Passive-Aggressive Italian-American Comedy.”  It is a one-woman hilarious comedy that sheds light into the central character’s (“Angela”) life, loves, family and Italian American traditions as she cooks on stage, and teaches the audience the “secret” to making the perfect Italian gravy.  The play never resorts to stereotype, as “Angela,” sometimes coy and reserved, oftentimes ribald and risqué, comes to terms with her heritage, insecurities, and family conflicts as she prepares dinner in this ethnic comedy.

Gravy is featured as part of the Downtown Urban Festival at the HERE Performing Arts Center(145 Avenue of the Americas, entrance on Dominick Street, one block south of Spring, C/ E to Spring Street) on Friday March 1st at 8:30PM. The running time is 70 minutes.

Instant Vaudeville: Breaking Bamboo is a series of 8 original works by new and emerging Asian American artists, culminating in four free public performances. A staple of 2g's annual programming, it challenges teams to create live theatre in a fast, furious and collaborative manner over the course of one week. Playwright/director and/or devising ensembles will create 6-8 minute pieces of theater across a variety of genres such as puppetry plays, musicals, improvisation, choreography (dance and/or fight), clowning, physical theater, dramas and comedies.

Talking Band, the award-winning experimental theater company, is proud to present OBSKENE, a new play conceived and directed by OBIE Award-winner Tina Shepard, written in concert with eight playwrights, including fellow Talking Band founders Ellen Maddow and Paul Zimet, as well as acclaimed playwrightsMarcus Gardley (2011 PEN/Laura Pels Award recipient), David Greenspan (Guggenheim Playwriting Award recipient), Sidney GoldfarbJohn Jesurun(MacArthur "Genius" Award recipient), Deb Margolin (OBIE Award and Kesselring Prize recipient), and Lizzie Olesker.  OBSKENE will be performed at HERE(145 6th Avenue – Enter on Dominick, One Block South of Spring) from November 1st – November 17th. “Obskene” is the Greek term for “off-stage” and is the basis for the word “obscene”: it refers to the horrendous and unseen acts of violence that happen off-stage but are never depicted in Greek tragic plays.

OBSKENE utilizes both messenger speeches of classical Greek Tragedy (newly adapted by Sidney Goldfarb and Lizzie Olesker)  and reports from the near future in a variety of styles creating a multi-layered narrative.  The Talking Band has commissioned a diverse group of award-winning  playwrights to write contemporary “messenger” speeches.   The Greek messenger speeches contain some of the most disturbing images in the entirety of theater history,  but they also vividly capture the humor, passion and humanity of their subjects.  Similarly the contemporary reports imagine the harrowing, comic, and heartbreaking aspects of our lives in the years to come.

Writer/performer Elizabeth Claire Taylor was named after the most beautiful woman in the world. It’s a lot to live up to - the eyes, the diamonds, the booze, the pills, the men, the marriages, the diets, the hits, and the flops. But oh how she’s tried. FINDING ELIZABETH TAYLOR is love letter to La Liz and her namesake – two women obsessed with life and its finer points.

FINDING ELIZABETH TAYLORwon the 2011 Planet Connections Theatre Festivity Award for Outstanding Solo Show. Cheryl King, the Artistic and Managing Director of Stage Left Studio, which is dedicated to solo work, will direct the piece.

Elizabeth Claire Taylor graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she trained at The Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting. She is currently one of the most in demand plus size models. She has been featured in Oprah Magazine, Women's Day, Good Morning America and was the recent subject of a profile by the New York Times about her life in relation to her famous namesake. Her clients include Elie Tahari, J. Crew and Vera Wang. Her favorite theatrical credits are The Exonerated, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Free time, if any, is spent on eating disorder awareness and feminist activism.

A lush sci-fi noir told with myth, media, live music, red-light cabaret and Indian dance-theatre. Voyeurism, eroticism and terror converge in this sensual tale of violence and revolution in a futuristic world where everyone is being watched and no one can escape. This unique, total theatrical experience is the result of a cross-discipline collaboration between artists from the US, Central Europe and Asia.

About the Company: Theatre Reverb

Theatre Reverb was founded in 2006 by Kristin Arnesen and Radoslaw Konopka with a mission of developing innovative new work and hybrid pieces. They have collaborated with other artists, notably company member Christopher Thomas Gilkey, to create a series of full-length performances, live art, and video works that they have shown at venues throughout NYC and at Festivals including FRIGID NY, Montreal Fringe, Ottawa Fringe and the Boulder Fringe. They have performed internationally in Berlin at HomeBase and tamtamArt (2011) and in Toronto at Buddies in Bad Times. The press has called Theatre Reverb's work: “funny, serious, erotic, and fascinating;” “visually stunning;” and the “pre-postmodernism of Tristan Tzara and Dada”. 

Theatre Reverb’s unique style is influenced by silent cinema, popular culture, circus arts and classical Indian theatre which Kristin and Radoslaw studied together on two trips to Kerala India. Theatre Reverb productions typically combine sampled and original media, narrative, and dance to explore topical issue from militarism and fear culture to sexual politics and celebrity worship.

They have been artists in residence and regular performers at Galapagos Art Space since 2008, they were included in Horse Trade Theatre Group's 2008 season, they were featured on Polish television's Oblicza Ameryki (2006), they won “Audience Choice” and “Most Innovative” awards for their FRIGID festival productions (2008 & 2012), and they are sponsored artists of the Brooklyn Arts Council. Theatre Reverb has also collaborated with the Ukrainian feminist protest group FEMEN to stage political performance actions and media stunts.

The company is currently collaborating with composer and musician Ellery Royston and kutiyattam artists Ammannur Rajaneesh Chakyar and Bhadra Rajaneesh on a large-scale cross-cultural project Reliquum.  The first installment of the piece entitled Initium/Finis is set for presentation at Horse Trade's Under St. Marks in June and at the HERE Arts Artist Lodge Series in July 2012.

Neighborhood Productions will present Olives and Blood, a haunting new play by JEFF-nominated playwright Michael Bradford, with musical accompaniment by guitarist Nick Trautman.

It is said in Spain that the dead are always more alive than the day they were born. So it is for the presumed murderer of Federico Garcia Lorca, Juan Luis Trescante Medina. Sixty years after Lorca's death, the aging fascist, Trescante, fights to hold onto the myth of a murder that defined his life. But in Spain, sixty years is little more than a breath, and a reckoning is all but inevitable.

Imagine that you don’t have a country.  It doesn’t matter if you believe you’re American, because no one else believes you—not potential employers, not banks that issue student loans, not the government.  There is no way to become legally American.  You don’t exist.  Worse, you are hunted for deportation.  You love this country, but the country does not love you back.
Dream Acts, written collectively by Mia Chung, Jessica Litwak, Chiori Miyagawa, Saviana Stanescu and Andrea Thome,and directed by Kristin Horton, performed by Neimah Djourabchi, Anna Kull, Rey Lucas, Rory Lipede, Tiffany Villarin, with consulting dramaturgy by Suzy Fay, will premiere at HERE, with performances on March 23-25 at 7pm, March 25 at 2pm and a free panel discussion with undocumented youths and the artists on March 25 at 2pm.

In Dream Acts, five undocumented teens from Nigeria, Mexico, Ukraine, Korea, and Jordan face the extraordinary challenge of living ordinary lives under the radar. Each story is moving and urgent; some are funny, others are tragic, and through their experiences, we learn about facts about the DREAM Act and the secret lives lead by undocumented youth.
 
DREAM Act Union (www.dreamactunion.org) is a group of seven women theater artists from diverse backgrounds. Mia Chung is a Korean-American playwright obsessed with migration in all its forms, ranging from geographic to economic. Jessica Litwak is a theatre activist, teacher, playwright, drama therapist and actor. Chiori Miyagawa is a Japan-born U.S. playwright whose work often revolves around themes of memory and identity. Andrea Thome is a Chilean-Costa Rican, Wisconsin-born playwright who grew up navigating multiple landscapes and languages. Saviana Stanescu is a Romanian-born award-winning playwright and the founder/president of Immigrant Artists and Scholars in New York. Kristin Horton is a director primarily interested in new plays that engage cross-cultural dialogue as well as the staging of classics for the contemporary stage.
 
DREAM Act Union formed as a working group when playwright Chiori Miyagawa realized that the failed immigration bill, the DREAM Act, was largely unknown to her peers and invited like-minded theater artists to brainstorm about how the awareness about the bill could be raised through a theatrical event among the theater makers, audiences and educators. The legislative proposal is meant to provide a legal pathway for youth who entered the country before age 16 to be with their parents to become documented if they go to college or serve in the military for two years.
 
The process for the project began with the playwrights having conversations with undocumented youths.  The youths who volunteered to talk to them were enthusiastic and even grateful that they were interested in their stories, and the writers were moved by their plight as well as their dreams and ambitions.  This play is not a documentary drama, and the stories are not based on their lives. The content of the play is inspired by them as well as recent events.
 
The play was written through a unique collaborative process. Each writer began from a perspective different from her own ethnicity and wrote a ten-minute play.  Next, the team integrated the five short plays by interweaving the stories of the five central characters.  Then the writers wrote in pairs scenes in which two of the central characters meet. Through this unusual and challenging process guided by director Kristin Horton, the group has created a tapestry, portraying the lives of five undocumented youth. 
 

This project is co-sponsored by Immigrant Artists and Scholars in New York(an alliance of outstanding people working in the arts and academia who are committed to support, nurture and advocate for immigrant voices as a vital and vibrant part of the New York City community)and has received developmental support from the Lark Play Development Theater, New Dramatists, New York Theatre Workshop, INTAR, and NYU Gallatin. Masha finds herself being pursued by three men: the boring one she married too early in life, the depressed one she spent her youth unrequitedly pining for, and the dashing model of perfection she meets far too late. She struggles to take action to remedy her past mistakes and choose the path that holds the key to her future. Will she ever break this cycle of stasis and sadness? 

 

Anton Chekhov, famous for his use of subtext and samovars, gave the modern world a new form of theatrical expression through such monumental works as The Seagull and Three Sisters. Drawing upon such similarities as unrequited love, a relentless yearning to escape to Moscow, and a central character named Masha, Theater Reconstruction Ensemble has created an elaborate experiment of truly Russian proportions. A MASHA-up unlike any seen before! In combining these two extraordinary plays into one, TRE company member Jaclyn Backhaus and artistic director John Kurzynowski seek to explore the foundation of modern theatrics by forcing twenty-four of Chekhov’s most exciting characters into one world. And with twenty-four actors inhabiting the depths of New York’s iconic HERE Arts Center, this is one Chekhovian experiment that’s not to be missed!

JACLYN BACKHAUS (playwright) is an actor, playwright, and screenwriter based out of Brooklyn, NY. She is a co-founder of Fresh Ground 

Pepper, a developmental series for emerging artists and new work. The Three Seagulls, or MASHAMASHAMASHA! marks her third 

collaboration with director John Kurzynowski and Theater Reconstruction Ensemble, of which she is a founding ensemble member. As an 

actor, she appeared in John's productions of A Doll's House (Access Theater Gallery) and Hamlet (The Paradise Factory). Other credits 

include Our Farm (The Tank, The Cherry Pit, Philadelphia's Underground Arts) and Michael Caine's Egypt School (an original web series). 

Written works include Folk Wandering, a new musical, (debuted at Fresh Ground Pepper PlayGround December 2011); What It's Like When 

Two Geeks Love Each Other (Fresh Ground Pepper at The Tank); James Franco Brings the Light of God to the Linguistics Department at the

Comedy and creepy thrills lurk within The House, where closed doors open to reveal shadowy secrets.  Aimed at the family audience (adults, teens, and tweens ages 10+), The House is created and performed by Denmark’s acclaimed Sofie Krog Teater, returning to HERE with this new production following 2009’s DIVA, which launched the StartHERE program.
 
Brimming with innovative puppetry and exhilarating cartoon-drama, The House springs from a revolving set with intricate lights, complex contraptions and sound effects.  The eponymous House serves as a funeral home, occupied by the reclusive, rich Mrs. Esperanza and her faithful dog.  As the House’s private rooms expose the old secrets and devious deeds of both inhabitants and oddball visitors, the audience is lured into a suspenseful yet amusing adventure that stirs both light and dark sides of imagination.

HERE’s Dream Music Puppetry Program is one of few programs in the country to grow and commission contemporary adult puppet works.  Dream Music provides performance opportunities to puppet artists and encourages multidisciplinary collaboration to develop new puppetry techniques.  This program was inaugurated with the premiere of Basil Twist’s OBIE-award winning Symphonie Fantastique in 1998 and the opening of the Dorothy B. Williams Theatre, an intimate space created specifically for intimate puppetry.  Under the artistic direction of Twist, with producing direction from HERE co-founder Barbara Busackino, the Dream Music aesthetic is geared toward puppet works that feature live music as a collaborative element.  Dream Music seeks to secure the future of puppetry by providing increased development and performance opportunities to puppet artists, and by collaborating with artists from other disciplines to develop new puppetry techniques.  Over the past ten years, Dream Music has presented in the Dorothy B. Williams Theatre many exciting artists ranging from eclectic international troupes to The Jim Henson International Festival of Puppetry and has commissioned over 20 full-scale puppetry works from New York based puppeteers including the acclaimed Arias with a Twist in 2008 (which returned in September 2011 for a limited engagement at Abrons Arts Center).
 
Since 1993, the OBIE-winning HERE, Kristin Marting, Artistic Director and Kim Whitener, Producing Director, has been one of New York’s premier arts organizations and a leader in the field of producing and presenting new, hybrid performance viewed as a seamless integration of artistic disciplines—theater, dance, music and opera, puppetry, media, visual and installation, spoken word and performance art.  Standout productions include Basil Twist’s Symphonie Fantastique and Arias with a Twist, Hazelle Goodman’s On Edge, Trey Lyford & Geoff Sobelle’s all wear bowlers, Young Jean Lee’s Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven, Corey Dargel’s Removable Parts, Taylor Mac’s The Lily’s Revenge and Yoav Gal’s Mosheh, among many others.  HERE’s work is challenging and alternative and offers audiences the opportunity to feel that they are part of something new and fresh. 

Dziewczyna (Polish for "girl")  | Open: 12/16/11 Close: 12/17/11
 

 

Dziewczyna (Polish for "girl") is an 80 minute theatrical concert that tells the story of a Polish girl named Elzbieta.

It begins in August 1956 as Sopot, Poland hosts its first ever Jazz Festival. Jazz was emerging from the underground and seen as a symbol of freedom and liberation. Four-year-old Elzbieta watches her father’s counterculture jazz ensemble play at the festival. Later, in October 1956, Maksymilian Jach and band member Janusz Tumas travel to Warsaw to protest, demanding the government release the jailed Cardinal Wyszynski. Maks is arrested and disappears, sending Elzbieta on a lifelong quest for her father shaping her role as a family member, woman, and citizen, her Polish identity, and a way to tell her story.

In a series of flashback vignettes, live jazz, classical and electronic musical selections, Elzbieta recounts her life in communist Poland and missing her lost father. Through videos and historical photography, we witness her scarring memories of soviet tanks outside Warsaw in 1956; share in her poignant reminiscences as she grows from a young girl to a young woman; and observe as she chronicles searching for her father, the deaths of family members and friends, protests met with violence and repression, and a life that is constantly threatened by the regime whose official image directly opposes the rapidly developing political and artistic movements. It is through this turmoil that Elzbieta develops the desire to stand up for liberty and for Poland. 

As the Solidarity movement spreads, our story comes to a close. In December 1981, Elzbieta revisits her horrible memories when tanks return to the streets as martial law is declared, but this time she is ready to stand up and fight for freedom. In an act of solidarity with our audience, we present a montage of the events that will shape Poland in the 1980s and the future republic. Where Dziewczyna ends, the modern Polish journey begins.

Someone's Trying To Kill Me  | Open: 11/18/11 Close: 12/04/11
The 1950’s American dream comes crashing into contemporary reality presented in a multi-media mysterious, thrilling and sometimes darkly humourous tale of parallel worlds colliding to reveal stark truths and hidden secrets.

Through the narrative of Dylan and Olivia Stratford is an exploration in where creativity comes from and how it is harnessed in a classic 1950’s American  setting  but with progressive contemporary points of view. At first glance it is a classic murder mystery. Beyond this enchanting thriller is a subtext which aligns two different venues of creativity and illustrates how each of those venues is subtly stifled by hyper capitalism. Exposing the light of inspiration  in American  storytelling  in theater and  film analogous to inspiration  in innovation  and  productivity  in American  manufacturing, it offers the hypothesis that the lack of nurturing and support of motivated ideas in both areas leads to decay and stagnation of the American dream.

Pieces of Paper: Aspirations of 9/11  | Open: 05/13/11 Close: 05/14/11

PIECES OF PAPER - ASPIRATIONS OF 9/11, a theatrical multimedia meditation on the power of human compassion in action the week of September 11, 2001, is being prepared for the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2010. The production is currently being presented at HERE Arts Center, through May 14th.

 

Conceived and directed by theater artist and 9/11 first responder Michael Simon Hall, a large ensemble of actors representing every walk of life take the audience on an emotional theatrical journey, using movement, video, text, and original music by internationally acclaimed composer Anton Batagov. This story of hope is inspired by actual handwritten documents created the week of 9/11 by grassroots volunteers at the Chelsea Piers Support Center in New York City.

Pulitzer Award winning author Robert Olen Butler shed some light on the multidisciplinary nature of Hall's project, "Michael is a dynamic artist who does not limit himself to a particular form to realize his vision.  He exhibits a sensitive intelligence and deep understanding.   I couldn't imagine a more inspired or effective collaborator."

 Pieces of Paper began development in the fall of 2010, at the Neighborhood Playhouse and more recently at the Joyce Soho.

The impetous for the concept, the pieces of paper themselves, were collected by Hall on Sunday, September 16th, 2001, when the grassroots volunteer operation at Chelsea Piers was shut down by the Office of Emergency Management, and the hundreds of volunteers were sent home. These artifacts were featured at the New-York Historical Society in an exhibit called "Radical Hospitality", and have been on loan to the National September 11 Memorial Museum.

Seeing "Pieces of Paper" brought me back to the finest time of my life, a time of pure love and connectedness. Seeing the sign I hadn't seen in 10 years, "Cell Phones Charge Up Station" gave me chills.  It hung over our table with 24/7 volunteers handing out phones to the rescue workers. As one woman said, "it was the closest to God she'd ever known" in those days. Thank you Michael Simon Hall for reminding us that it is within all of us to be of selfless service as thousands of us were then.

In “SWEET, SWEET MOTHERHOOD” Shelley McCann (Caroline Cooney) is a bitingly intelligent undergraduate student at a top university. Although Shelley covets a spot in a top graduate program, she would rather party than build up a respectable GPA. Professor Henry Stein (Michael De Nola) is an eminent biotechnology researcher and professor at Shelley’s university. One afternoon, Shelley stumbles into Stein’s office to propose a senior thesis. No ordinary research proposal, Shelley’s ideas lay bare the ethical and moral quandaries associated with biotechnology today.

The play is the hybrid child of its own experiment, the Two-Headed Challenge, where the Guthrie Theater and the Playwrights Center commissioned playwright Jeremy Kareken to collaborate on a play with molecular biologist Lee M. Silver, author of the controversial Challenging Nature and Remaking Eden: How Genetic Engineering and Cloning Will Transform the American Family.

7 Sins. 7 Playwrights. 60 Minutes. 7 Sins in 60 Minutes is a high-octane ride through the Seven Deadly Sins, done 21st-century style. Developed by seven award-winning playwrights and one director, the piece boasts a playful and provocative mix of comedy, drama, dance, spoken word and original music. Over the course of one hour, four characters -- Mike, Amadea, Dante and Willow – take a rollercoaster ride from sloth to pride.

In January 2010, New York-based director Melanie Sutherland assembled a group of actors, playwrights and a producer to develop a new touring piece inspired by the seven sins. Each playwright was assigned actors and asked to write a seven-minute scene based on one of the sins. After the first playwright finished her scene, it was passed along to the next one to continue the story and tell the next seven-minute portion through another sin. And so on…

Each year, a dozen or so 30-something Japanese women vacation in Paris, only to lose their minds. The only cure is never to go back. Watch as the six women of Ex.Pgirl journey to their own 'Paris,' combining theatrical, musical and cinematic genres into a riotous world of desires, delusion and disappointment. In a one-of-a-kind theatrical event driven by language games, spoken scenes, video interviews, vaudeville and dance, Ex.Pgirl investigates themes of identity, gender, place, expectations and belonging...all through a multicultural lens.

When young Lewis Diaz (Carlo Alban) accidentally resurrects the soul of a brutally slain girl named Alice (Amy Kim Waschke), he unwittingly unleashes a literal hell on Earth. Now with every sort of demon, monster, and killer ravaging his small town, Lewis along with his new girlfriend must find a way to close the rift before the big bad evil devil himself shows up and totally ruins their senior prom. Mixing slasher with Sam Raimi in Vampire Cowboys’ signature aesthetic, this show guarantees one bloody good time!

The six-member cast for “ALICE IN SLASHERLAND” will include: Carlo Alban (Lewis), Sheldon Best (Edgar/Duncan), Tom Myers (Jacob/Tommy/Sheriff Dunwoody), Bonnie Sherman (Margaret), Andrea Marie Smith (Tina), and Amy Kim Waschke (Alice).

New York Neo-Futurists Desiree Burch, Cara Francis & Erica Livingston serve up a cure for what ails you in this Neo-Medicine show, performing in and around a giant pot of self-made soup. Bottling this soup, as well as a series of elixirs, potions, tonics and products, they heal and reveal the female experience live, honest and in the flesh.

Incorporating ingredients from interviews, living newspaper, personal stories, circus acts and freak shows, the women of The Soup Show ultimately feed their audiences with a question “How far has the women's movement moved us?” The fierce trio honor the 30th Anniversary of Women’s History Month, and show you why the readers of the Village Voice named The New York Neo-Futurists “The 2009 Best Performance Artists in New York.”

Puppet Kafka  | Open: 04/22/09 Close: 05/10/09
PUPPET KAFKA delves into the work, life and peculiar perspective of Franz Kafka as imagined for performance by traditional Czech marionette, found object, and shadow puppets along with an ensemble of actors. Within Gregor Samsa’s tiny bedroom, three versions of Kafka are manipulated by forces from the outside. One is Gregor-Bug, a transforming creature who is losing sense of the human being he once was as he learns to use his many new legs. A second version is Franz Kafka himself, a sickly man and the cynical, suspicious center of his own works. And finally, the small letter ‘k’, a permanently young and reticent character haunted by an authoritarian father figure. Using the The Metamorphosis as the main framework along with references to The Trial, numerous Kafka short stories, his letters and diaries, PUPPET KAFKA examines the many parallels between life and art.

PUPPET KAFKA features marionettes by Miroslav Trejtnar (winner of the 1996 Bayerischen Design Award at the Munich International Crafts Fair), with additional puppets by Gretchen Van Lente, lighting by Jeanette Yew, sound by Matt Tennie, set by Markus Maurette and Meghan Williams, video by Pete Dimas, assistant direction by Rita Kompelmakher, and performances by John Ardolino, Deborah Heshaw, Jason Howard, Tatiana Pavela, Adam Sullivan, and Scott Weber.
B. Walker Sampson’s plays include: Silent Steps: A Play with MacGuffins, Alceste, Assistance Absence of a House, Roosevelt Island, Clear Across, and Full View. In New York, his plays have been seen at American Theatre of Actors, HERE, and Jean Cocteau Rep. He was a member of the 2004 Writer/Director Lab at Soho Rep, and additionally has had readings of his plays at the Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis, Theatre of NOTE in Los Angeles, and The Flea. He received his MFA in playwriting from Brooklyn College.

Thirst: A Spell For Christabel  | Open: 03/10/09 Close: 04/12/09
THIRST  retells Coleridge's gothic story in an abandoned forest suffering from an apocalyptic drought. Christabel and her father, stubborn hold-outs in the dying woods, are visited by a mysterious and opportunistic woman who quickly transforms their quiet world. Soon they must choose between her frightening, seductive promises and the quickly diminishing safety of the life they've always known.

THIRST  will feature Matthew Cowles (Veronika Decides to Die, Life on Mars, Oz), Lori Funk, and Elizabeth Gross as Christabel, with set by Susan Zeeman Rogers, costumes by Chloe Chapin, lighting by Justin Townsend, and sound design by Arielle Edwards. Stage management will be by Rosie Goldman.

Playwright Monika Bustamante is a member of Austin, Texas-based Hyde Park Theatre, Refraction Arts Project, Shrewd Productions, and Austin Script Works. "THE UNCANNY APPEARANCE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES" is a carnival-style crime investigation filled with live original rock music, high-energy acrobatics, slapstick comedy antics, cross-dressing, and twentieth century philosophy. The play follows the world-famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, as he investigates the bizarre murders of Dr. Jeremy Nietzsche and Dr. Kevin Freud. To complicate matters, Holmes becomes embroiled in a competition of wits against a formidable female detective, Jacqueline Derrida. As the investigation progresses, the case begins to unravel, and so does the very fabric of Holmes's hyper-rational reality.

NERO FIDDLED is pleased to announce the world premiere production of LIFE AFTER BUSH, directed by Noah Diamond and Amanda Sisk. LIFE AFTER BUSH will play a limited, three-weekend, engagement at HERE Arts Center (145 Sixth Avenue, between Spring and Broome). Against the backdrop of this historic election, an exuberant cast paints a musical and comic portrait of the American political scene a satire so sharp that within a few months, Bush and Cheney will have no choice but to leave office.

On Election Night, as the world awaits LIFE AFTER BUSH, there will be a special event which will feature real time results on the electoral map, speeches on live television, blogging stations, and reports from correspondents across the nation, beginning at 6 p.m.

MAN IS MAN follows the transformation of Galy Gay from a naive and ignorant porter in Colonial British India into a vicious fighting machine, at the hands of a company of soldiers who need a fourth man. Offering an unusual view on the dilemmas and cruelties of war, Binnerts' production of MAN IS MAN is played as "real-time theater," with the actors always present on stage as themselves, in effect being themselves in the play's roles and scenes, which they re-create.

The production, produced by The Elephant Brigade at HERE Arts Center, features Lauren Blumenfeld, Tristin Daley, Eric Eastman, Brandon Kyle Goodman, Natalie Kuhn, Justin Lauro, and Sarah Wood.

10 Plates is a multicultural journey that traverses the intersections among urban myths, true horror stories, and food. In their humerous, visual, and quirky style of physical theatre, Ex.Pgirl treads the line between danger and humor, revealing the ridiculous, disturbing and heartbreaking aspects of everyday fears.

In 10 Plates, five performers share stories from their distinct cultures. These stories, expressed through movement, video, song, and different languages, examine the nature of fear and how it is embedded in different cultures. The various scenes lend a quirky, humorous tone to the piece which the performers capitalize on: never taking themselves too seriously. And yet, their stories and actions poignantly reveal the crippling power that fear has over people.

"10 Plates does not make light of peoples' fears," say Ex.Pgirl artistic co-directors Bertie Ferdman and Suzi Takahashi, "but re-contextualizes them, allowing viewers to experience both terror and laughter as two sides of the same coin."

"curiouser & curiouser" is written by Gretchen Van Lente, using text from Lewis Carroll, Charles Dodgson and Alice Hargreaves. The piece is directed and designed by Gretchen Van Lente. Lighting design is by Jeanette Yew; with costume assistance by Vita Mechachonis and set assistance by Markus Maurette. The piece stars Amy Carrigan as Alice, *Talaura Harms as Mrs. Liddell, *Jason Howard as Dodgson, Adam Sullivan as Carroll and Meghan Williams as Miss Prickett.

"curiouser & curiouser" was written and adapted using text from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Dodgson's diary entries and Alice Liddell's memoirs. The piece surrounds Lewis Carroll, Dodgson's alter ego, who investigates what could have possibly gone so wrong between Alice and Dodgson to destroy the very friendship that created him. The Alice puppet plays chess with tables in outrageous hats, is scolded by white rabbits made from handkerchiefs and takes boat rides with playing cards. Alice Liddell is represented by a sweet and disjointed doll-style puppet made from doll parts. All other characters come to life through toys, objects and furniture, and the occasional piece of cheese. Drama of Works uses puppetry, original music and songs, object theatre and physical theatre to create the landscape of curiouser & curiouser.

"Gretchen Van Lente's curiouser & curiouser' is a wonderful deconstruction of the Alice in Wonderland story, illuminating the complex and mysterious relationship of its author Lewis Carroll/Reverend Charles Dodgson and his muse Alice Hargreaves. The last performance of the festival will be a hoot! Crazy puppet artists from all over the city will come together to put up the most insane production of Alice ever staged. Each artist has been assigned a chapter from the book and can do with that chapter whatever they want. They have no idea what the rest are doing and they shouldn't care. Then, we perform the pieces back to back in order of the story and see what happens! All the way from Toronto, Stranger Theater brings their version of Alice to HERE. "And What Alice Found There" brings to life Lewis Carroll's writing of Alice in Wonderland, the real Alice, and the world in which they lived. Using a mixture of sources from Carroll's two famous novels, letters and other writings, we begin with a sunny day on the river and travel to far darker places. The story examines childhood, love, and the nature of creation. Alice Liddell's journey through Victorian times mirrors Alice in Wonderland's journey through the hallucinatory landscape of her author's imagination, where nothing is as it seems.

Stranger Theater's new work is a collaboration between an all-female group of performers, puppeteers and video artists, reworking a classic text to create a multi-media theatrical adventure using physical theater, puppetry, slide images, video, stop-motion animation, and a little tap dancing. Bizarre, visually stunning, funny and absurd, this is an enticing look at the troubled friendship that gave birth to a masterpiece.

Set in 1980, just 24 hours prior to the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Cougar, Washington, PHENOMENON captures the essence and impact of this historic event through up-close, intimate stories of various people in the town; a waitress, a busboy, a journalist, a geologist and a cowboy. As these citizens go about their daily lives, an event of enormous magnitude looms. The production employs digital and performance media, as well as dance and music with compositions inspired by styles ranging from 80s pop to Broadway This presentation closely follows the 25th anniversary of the eruption, which took place on May 18, 1980

Based on the tale by Washington Irving, and inspired by his sparse dialogue, lush imagery and vividly drawn mood, Sleepy Hollow is a large-scale shadow puppet re-telling of the classic story, featuring original live music written by Vivian Fung, which focuses on how one's vices can overtake them when faced with their wildest dreams and most overwhelming fears. The piece will play on a gigantic quilted screen, borrowing stylized movements and shapes from silent horror films, melodrama and Victorian silhouette; use lighting effects, costume, and natural materials, as well as traditional shadow puppetry to create a landscape unlike any other.

Two solo works - "Doolymoog" and "The Tangle"

"Doolymoog" explores landscapes of our isolated hearts. from prehistory to the post apocalypse, presenting characters with quiet and yearning voices. Mr. Paulsen habits a variety of unusual characters, at times pathetically tragic and at other times hysterically funny.

In "The Tangle" a cross-country bus ride turns into a classic western shoot-out. Joined by Butch Cassidy, a Greyhound passenger battles memebrs of an organization known only as "the controllers." Along the way, the passengers relays to us his theroy of modern psychology.

Drama of Works will once again extend the Halloween holiday, terrorizing unsuspecting New Yorkers. The majority of pieces will be puppet pieces (with an emphasis placed on variety), as well as dance, scene work, circus and live music.

SOME POSSIBLE ACTS: Drama of Works' Artistic Director Gretchen Van Lente and Artistic Associate John Ardolino present a piece from their newly formed children's theatre, 2 Punks Puppet Theatre. A piece for older kids, it's a dark, moody retelling of Poe's The Raven using three overhead projectors and virtuoso acting. Liz Joyce (recipient, with Steve Widerman, of an UNIMA Citation of Excellence) will reprise a classic toy theater retelling of her own Poe tale. A life-sized heart, eyeball and other oddities enact his classic, A Tell Tale Heart, in miniature. Nasty Canasta brings humor and a bit of whimsy to the festival with her Mummy's Curves. She and partner Johnny Porkpie's burlesque/hand puppet piece bring a spirit of the peepshow to this year's Carnival. Some of Jody Sperling's (Time Lapse Dance) dancers will bring Jody's signature contortions to the festival once again this year.

Also on the tentative roster are a solo marionette work by Sarah Frechette, puppets by Ken Berman and Dramaton Theater, the comedic puppet stylings of Evan Laurence, dance by Angie Harriell and much much more!!!

Meital Dohan, a movie star in Israel, tells the personal story of her long-distance infatuation with America. She's a star in her home country, but in America she's just another immigrant in search of the American Dream. Nearly nude with a bath tub as her pulpit and a video screen, a Filipino manicurist and a gay Texan stage manager as her co-stars, Ms. Dohan dances, sings and waxes on about everything American from nationality and identity to the globalization of American culture. She draws parallels from her experience to that of immigrants universally. The show is a 21st Century compendium of pop-cultural ideas with an unrelenting beat and even a "Charlie's Angels" style action sequence.

Girly, Sissy and Scotty have made little preparation for their excursion, lacking the rapport and equipment to function in this increasingly hostile environment.

Night falls, and Heather has not shown up. Meanwhile, Sissy has attracted the attention of James, a pornographer living in exile in a shack provided by his lawyer.
