AND MISS REARDON DRINKS A LITTLE  | Open: 05/05/17 Close: 05/20/17
And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little is an often biting and occasionally touching black comedy of the late 60s that centers on the lives of the three Reardon sisters, whose father abandoned the family long ago, and whose mother has recently passed away. The sisters, now adults and all working in the New York City public school system, have come to a crossroads - the youngest sister, having barely survived a scandalous incident at school, has suffered a nervous breakdown. When the married sister comes back to the childhood apartment the two unmarried sisters now share in an effort to commit her sibling to an institution, the built-up resentments of the last decade are pushed to the forefront. Should Anna be committed? Is it in her best interest or is it just easier for Ceil if she doesn’t have to care for her? Is it selfish of Catherine to want to keep her at home? Who is strongest in this fight of wills – and does Catherine really need another cocktail?

Produced by Retro Productions

The cast features Wynne Anders (Off-Broadway Claymont/Emerging Artists Theatre), Christopher Borg (Charles Busch's Judith of Bethulia/Theatre for the New City), Heather E. Moran (Widows directed by Hal Brooks at 59E59), and Sara Thigpen (NYIT Award for Best Actress in Burning the old Man Jo/Boomerang Theatre).

About the Company: Retro Productions

It is the mission of Retro Productions to present works of retro theatre. Retro is defined as "involving, relating to, or reminiscent of things past (American Heritage Dictionary)." At Retro Productions we will strive to tell good theatrical stories which have an historical perspective -with an emphasis on the 20th century- in order to broaden our own understanding of the world we live in. We believe through stories of human lives and struggles, both dramatic and comedic, we can understand social history and culture and how it affects us today.

Retro received recognition from their first two productions of Catholic School Girls and Mrs. California (as River Heights Productions) then gathered momentum in their third season with the Retro production of Still Life. Also directed by Ric Sechrest, Still Life received accolades from playwright Emily Mann: "Your production got it...Every aspect of the experience was first rate. Retro is clearly a company dedicated to creating impeccable work that truly matters," and Heather E. Cunningham's performance was honored alongside Romeo and Juliet’s Lauren Ambrose and August: Osage County’s Deanna Dunagan as one of Backstage's ‘2007 Performances to Remember’.

Retro Productions put themselves on the map in their fourth season producing Sally Nemeth's Mill Fire and What I Did Last Summer, called "...first-rate: brisk, sweet and occasionally quite moving," by playwright A.R. Gurney. This, their first season in residence at The Spoon Theater, garnered six 2008 New York Innovative Theatre Award nominations: two for performance and four for design, a New York Magazine ‘Off-off Broadway pick’ and the growing reputation of ‘the finished effect of a Retro Production’ (The Fab Marquee, Mill Fire). Kicking off with The Tender Trap and concluding with When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder? Retro's fifth season is proving that with a design team that has the ability to achieve 'theatrical time travel,' (The Fab Marquee) and "a powerful display of New York's dramatic talent," (offoffonline) Retro Productions is “...becoming a reliable source for first-class work.” (United Stages).

About the Company: The Onomatopoeia Theatre Company

The Onomatopoeia Theatre Company was formed to serve as a safe space for anyone who works in the arts, and considers themselves and to be an underdog, a misfit or just misunderstood. Quite often, many of these artists will have grand ideas, yet remain too apprehensive or afraid to express them. We at The Onomatopoeia Theatre Company wish to change this. Our goal is to promote ideas and performances that otherwise might not have been done for one reason or another or that have seemed just out of reach before. From doing a classic piece of theatre to experimenting with new possibilities in performance art, nothing is too big or too small for The Onomatopoeia Theatre Company. We are dedicated to producing the show that was always in someone's imagination! For instance, if you have ever had an idea at a party late at night, but you think no one would be interested, The Onomatopoeia Theatre Company would probably be interested. Our hope is that The Onomatopoeia Theatre Company will regularly serve as a catalyst for new idea's and possibilities.

Easter  | Open: 03/08/13 Close: 03/30/13
"Easter" (1901), a late realistic play by Sweden's greatest genius of the theater, August Strindberg, is a suspenseful masterpiece examining themes of suffering and transcendence through forgiveness. The Morgan family has been shamed and tortured by a family disgrace: its father is in prison for embezzlement and a daughter, Lenora, has been committed to an asylum. Mrs. Morgan and her son, Eliss, fear that they are on the brink of ruin, but as the snow melts and a single daffodil appears, Easter Eve brings them hope, joy and mercy. The play displays a power which can barely be matched in theater of its time. It personifies the playwright in the character of Eliss and contains one of Strindberg's best female roles in Lenora, who is inspired by the playwright's own daughter. To emphasize the timelessness of the play's themes, it will be acted by an all-black cast and adapted to the modern setting of Harlem in 1958.In "Easter," Strindberg revisits the same family that he had established in 1893 with"Playing With Fire." August Strindberg Repertory presented that play last Spring with an all-black cast in association with The Negro Ensemble. The production opened at the New School Theatre and was elevated to an Off-Broadway production at the Gene Frankel Theatre the following month; it was nominated for three Audelco awards including Best Revival and Best Ensemble. Actors from "Playing With Fire" will return to play their corresponding roles in "Easter.""Easter" plays Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 PM and Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM. Previews begin March 8; the opening is March 14 and last performance on Easter Sunday, March 31. Half-price student and senior discounts -- use discount codes STU9 and SNR9 for $9.00 tickets! Yentl  | Open: 10/10/12 Close: 10/21/12

The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective, who most recently presented the critically acclaimed revival of A Doll's Life and Examiner.com's "Dramatic Pick of the Year" neat & tidy will present Isaac Bashevis Singer's classic Yentl. Filled with a love of Torah, Yentl becomes Anshel - a man - and lives in hiding while studying at the Yeshiva. Entangled in a web of lies, Anshel befriends Avigdor and marries Hadass, taking both on a journey they won't soon forget.

The production stars Mallory Berlin (Nora, "A Doll's Life") in the the title role and is joined by Alex Pagels as Avigdor and Kim Sweet as Hadass. About the Company: The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective

The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective was founded in the summer of 2010 by its Artistic Director, Steven Carl McCasland. McCasland, who founded Group Therapy Productions while a student at Pace University, has been directing in New York (Medea, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Antigone, Death of a Salesman, Hamlet, and others) since 2005.

Beautiful Soup uses theater to bring to light our own struggles and create a dialog. Exploring new works and classics in innovative ways, stretching a shoe-string budget to create visually enchanting minimalist productions, the Collective honors a different charitable organization with each production. Often using the themes of the play or musical to select the benficiary, a portion of funds raised at the box office are donated to the chosen charity.

While serving the community, the Soup strives to bring light to all types of theater, new and old. Each season, the Collective presents:
-one revival of a "lost" play
-one revival of a "lost" musical
-one classical play (typically Shakespearean or Greek)
-one play (comedy or drama) written after 1960 OR one new play
-one production for all ages

Previous productions include: the criticaly acclaimed world premiere play neat & tidy, the first New York revival of A Doll's Life which ran in repertory with Ibsen's A Doll's House,BLACK [Billy Learns About Captain Kirk] & BLUE, William Shakespeare's HamletCrossing Brooklyn: a musical by Jenny Giering and Laura Harrington, The WSXR Players' Present Their June 7, 1944 Broadcast of William Shakespeare's TWELFTH NIGHT, or What You Will and Steven Carl McCasland's world premiere play, Alice Au Pays Des Merveilles (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland).

Theater can be for the masses if we let it. With The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective, you can return to your roots and explore the boundaries of theater while continuing to serve your community. Learn more at www.beautifulsouptheatercollective.org.

Quizzically Quimsical  | Open: 09/07/12 Close: 09/09/12
A performance piece made up of poetry, prose, narrative, music, choreography, and movement. This is a story about a boy on a queer journey toward self-fulfillment. The journey is shaped by the boy's first influence from a feminine force, a femme fatale: his mother. Upon identifying with a queer identity, the struggle becomes appropriating the haunting presence of his eccentric mother within the realm of exploring what queer means to each individual: both sexually and emotionally. How do we ever know when we have reached solid ground? How do we ever know when we have taken roots into something concrete?

Magdalen, Part Of Fringenyc 2012  | Open: 08/12/12 Close: 08/24/12
MAGDALEN is inspired by the stories and experiences of the women and girls who were sent away to “wash their sins” in Ireland’s commercial Magdalene Laundries run by nuns in the Twentieth Century.   More than 30,000 women – deemed promiscuous and in need of rehabilitation – reportedly passed through the Ireland asylums, which were open until 1996. Long silenced voices spring to life in this one-woman play about the concealed lives hidden behind convent walls.

TWO DAYS 'TIL DAWN

Written by Tyler Ham Pong

Directed by Laura Sisskin-Fernández

"The line between inspiration and insanity."

Two Days 'til Dawn follows a troubled writer, who risks his grasp on reality in search of inspiration. Disconnecting from his family, and with potetially more at stake, he seeks salvation through the advice given by the ghosts of three literary figures.

Continuing Tyler Ham Pong's trend of hyper aware dialogue and analysis of the human condition, Two Days 'til Dawn, is "not only an expression of art as life, but a presentation of art created in life," according to the director, Laura Sisskin-Fernández. Harnessing elements of dream, memory and all of life's promises -- this play is a psychological tour de force not to be missed!

Two Days 'til Dawn stars Anthony Ames, Mary Monahan, Geoffrey Pomeroy and Jillian K. Waters.

Costume Designer/Assistant Director is Crys Huyett. Lighting Designers are Tracy Wertheimer and Jane Slade. Sound Designer is Danny Madden. Choreographer is Bronwen Carson.

Finding Elizabeth Taylor  | Open: 06/15/11 Close: 06/25/11

Benefiting amfAR, Leo Rising Productions is pleased to present FINDING ELIZABETH TAYLOR, a multi-media homage to La Liz written and performed by Elizabeth Claire Taylor* as part of the 3rd Annual Planet Connections Theatre Festivity.  The production will be held at The Gene Frankel Theater, 24 Bond Street, NYC, 10003 for six performances from June 15-25, 2011. Morgan Gould directs.AEA Approved Showcase. *Member, Actors’ Equity Association.

What does it feel like to be the most beautiful woman in the world? THIS Elizabeth Taylor certainly doesn't know. Between skinny blond roommates, monstrous treadmills and an infamous pair of ill-fitting Bongo jeans, it's a wonder she can make it to her Overeaters Anonymous meeting on time. Channeling her celebrity namesake while on a journey of self-acceptance, will Elizabeth Claire Taylor ever find her true self because of, and despite, a legendary name?

“I had always heard of Elizabeth Taylor's commitment to AIDS research and diligent activism, but this was in the present looking back – it was only when I read a ton of biographies did I grasp how bold it was for her to speak out in the 1980's – when celebrity activism was unheard of, particularly in regards to something as taboo and shrouded in stigma as AIDS. When I realized the through-line of my solo play, Finding Elizabeth Taylor, was a call to arms for young women to refute the corporate blitz on their bodies and minds, I saw the link. I want to look back on my life and believe I did the best I could with the gift I was given. And my gift is my name.”

Hanako Junction  | Open: 04/07/11 Close: 04/30/11
Auguste Rodin was first introduced to the Japanese dancer and actress Hanako, a featured member of Loie Fuller's dance troupe in 1906. Captivated by her beauty and strength, her dramatic renditions in scenes of dying, Rodin was thrilled to have Hanako become one of his model. A fascinating woman, she became a pawn caught between the great artist and the equally imperious Fuller. Hanako Junction weaves a turn of the century Parisian tale with another set in contemporary New York City.

The impulse to create, the possession of the art, and the possession of the artist.

at Sixes and Sevens  | Open: 03/10/11 Close: 03/13/11
The emerging devised performance company Te Ilum joins forces with up-and-coming dance theatre artist Chloe Kernaghan to bring a brand new work:

"at Sixes & Sevens"

Sixes and Sevensan idiom to describe a state of confusion or disarray.

The creation of “at Sixes & Sevens” started with the concept of self-realization.  Using the archetype of a 1950s housewife, just left by her husband, Ms. Kernaghan and her dance ensemble deconstruct the process in which each of us continue to define and redefine ourselves:  Asking the question, do we really shape ourselves or does the world do it for us. As realities and worlds start to shift, the character, and audience loose track of what is real and what is not. In this murky existence is where raw impulsive movement will start to explore the real composition of this woman--who she really is, how to identify her, and what is she in the world when her reason to live leaves her...

Macbeth  | Open: 12/01/10 Close: 12/19/10
More than just a tale of “vaulting ambition”, Mortal Folly’s Macbeth is not so much a history as a deeply affecting morality tale, an emotional study of humanity risking everything in the name of love and honor, and gravely suffering the consequences. Harte-DeCoux’s adaptation of the Folio takes advantage of Macbeth's relative brevity to add moments of non-verbal storytelling throughout the play, enriching the story with contextual details and giving enlightening new perspective to some of theatre’s most well-known and frequently-performed roles.  Set in a mythical Dark Age of feudal lords and long swords, Mortal Folly’s take on this story of sorrow, blood, and destiny explores the balance between Fate and Free Will, and offers a personal, passionate and cinematic take on one of the Bard’s greatest tragedies.

Macbeth features Mark August, Alyssa Borg, Erik Cheski, Sam Eggers, David A Ellis*, Josey Nicole Housley*, Bryant Martin*, Matthew Rini, John Short, Liz Sklar*, Hannah Sloat*, Brandon Smith, Melanie Stroh, and Robert Lee Taylor*.

*Appearing courtesy of Actor’s Equity Association

Like Mortal Folly’s highly successful A Midsummer Night’s Dream (June 2010 at The Richmond Shepard Theatre), Macbeth will feature music composed specifically for the production by Musical Director Amanda Gookin and spectacular fights choreographed by resident Fight Director Nathan DeCoux.  New to Macbeth is an arsenal of hand-crafted weapons and armor provided by Gotham Armory, who recently crafted the weapons for the hit Broadway show Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.  The show’s assistant director and character movement expert is Stacee Mandeville.

His Beauty  | Open: 06/05/10 Close: 06/26/10
Interweaving surprising elements of music, dance and multimedia with text from Marilyn Frye, Beat poetry and Nabokov’s “Lolita”, 'his beauty' examines physical beauty as a source of obsession, oppression and seduction. This dark comedy follows four people's chance intersections on one night– and how they use each other to satisfy their own desires at any cost.

Production Designer: Jonathan Cottle
Video and Projection Designer: Danny Abalos
Choreographer: Ashley Hannan
Costume Designer: Christine Dow
Fight Choreographer: Stephanie Cox-Williams

Hostages  | Open: 01/06/10 Close: 01/24/10
Two British professors have left their homeland for a war-zone. They are there on a mission of peace, but peace is hard to find when you’re chained to a radiator.

Yussef El-Guindi, (Back of the Throat, Jihad Jones and The Kalashnikov Babes), one of California’s most esteemed playwrights, presents a powerful telling of human behavior at its basest. HOSTAGES explores the intricacies of human nature when it is deprived of personal contact and torn from the pleasantries of every day life.

Award-winning director Jack Young; currently heading the University of Houston’s graduate program and former artistic director of both the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival and The Warehouse Theatre leads Miscreant Theatre founder-actors, Jacob Knoll (The Creditors) and Jeff Barry (Creditors and Ivanov) in the telling of this explosive and timely play.

Ivanov  | Open: 06/10/09 Close: 06/28/09
Miscreant Theatre will ravage Chekhov's first full-length drama with a new adaptation by co-artistic directors Jacob Knoll and Jeff Barry. Ivanov offers a petri dish view into Chekhov's anti-hero - 32 year old Nicholas Ivanov - once prosperous and idealistic; now feckless, absent, and riddled with depression.

In this adaptation, Ivanov struggles to make sense of his vulgar existence while his wife tries to accept her lonely death. In a community obsessed with gossip and greed, Miscreant will investigate the underlying complexities of hate and love along with Chekhov's depraved sense of humor.

"If they ever want to remake the Sally Field classic, "Sybil," Kurt Fitzpatrick might just be the man to take on the role...Fitzpatrick convincingly portrays so many characters you might think he has multiple personality disorder. But this New York-based actor brings a lot more to the table than an arsenal of accents and different mannerisms...he chronicles a lifestyle familiar to many creative people...Fitzpatrick is candid, honest, and not afraid to be goofy in this personal script. This powerful new work, inspired by William Golding's beloved novel, Lord of the Flies, tells the gut-wrenching tale of a group of school girls, struggling for survival, after a plane crash leaves them stranded on an uninhabited island. This provocative new play was developed through a unique and innovative improvisational process, which included all nine actors featured in the upcoming production. FALLEN is a human story that examines our connection to civilization and each other. It explores the potential for darkness and disorder that lurks within us all. In an age of natural disasters, unforeseeable tragedy, and questionable government policies, we are faced with a world full of uncertainty. In FALLEN, as in our world today, this uncertainty breeds fear, greed and a ruthless drive for power. The play explores themes that are both timeless and timely, such as human nature, gender, peer dynamics, power, and government.

Dead Certain- An out- of-work actor is hired by a reclusive, theatre-obsessed ex-dancer to privately act out a play she has written. The suspense builds layer upon layer as this taut psychological thriller gathers speed at an alarming rate towards a gripping climax.

Marcus Lloyd's script Dead Certain has been called "a delicious four-dimensional pretzel." When asked in an interview about writing Dead Certain, Marcus Lloyd replies with a question. "How much control do we have over our lives?" he ponders. "Are we following some script out there, or do we have some control?

Not surprising that Lloyd questions our ability to control our known universe. In addition to writing for both the large and small screens as well as the stage Marcus Lloyd studied physics at Oxford University. Question about the reality of our perceived surroundings are second nature to him. This is clearly illustrated in Dead Certain where truth and illusion become almost inseparably entangled in a real life game of cat a mouse.
