‘Black is the Color of my Voice’ was written by Apphia Campbell, and was first performed in Shanghai May 2013. It has several sold out performances and received great reviews from the media and Shanghai community. The play recounts an American singer Mena Bordeux’s personal and artistic journey. It’s inspired by a real life singer, Nina Simone, and features music in the style of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Ella Fitzgerald. After the untimely death of her father, Mena falls into a deep depression. To cope, she seeks the help of a witch doctor who orders her to isolate herself in a room for three days without human contact, and no consumption of alcohol or cigarettes, and only a can of carnation milk to keep her company. She explores her life, and is propelled forward by the music of her career to seek the peace that she desire
