Co-lab  | Open: 02/03/14 Close: 02/03/14
Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) is interested in how artists collaborate across genres, over time. He has asked an array of current collaborators (and friends) of his, to join him in an evening of performance, conversation, and questioning. They form an esteemed list of actors, writers, dancers, choreographers, and musicians. Following performances and presentations by each guest, they will all sit and form a roundtable discussion on their work and careers, inviting our audience in to ask questions and comments.

The show will fuse spoken word poetry, Hip Hop (written and freestyle), and jazz (improvisational piano, harmonica, cello, and singing). The subject matter will explore the way the some people label certain people "crazy" so as to normalize suffering and self-obsession.

It will feature performances by Lily Myers (author of "Shrinking Woman"), Safia Elhillo (member of the NYU Slam Team that won the 2012 & 2013 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational), Alok Vaid-Menon (activist-extraordinar) Sam Friedman/Mel Hsu/Jess Best (improv-extraordinars), Cherkira Lashley (member of the 2013 & 2014 Wesleyan Slam Team), and E. Oks (aka Evan Okun aka the dude in sweat-pants who freestyles to himself on the NYC Subway).

Single Malt Scotch Slam  | Open: 01/19/14 Close: 01/19/14
Truly a highlight of the Bowery Poetry year, the annual Single Malt Scotch Poetry Slam is a celebration of unique flavors found in the divergent worlds of New York avant whatever poetry and prized single malt Scotches, blending into a highland fling of performance and booze. Overseen by the bekilted Roberts, poets Fitterman and Holman, five fresh poets introduce the Scotches while the audience tipples, giggles, guzzles and roars, a tasting which continues as the poet segues into his/her own verse. The audience then rates the Scotches, not the poems, claro? This year's poets are curated by Steve Zultanski, while the newly-released Bruichladdich "Laddie Ten" is a favorite amongst the Scotch connoisseurs.

As it stands, the majority of the world's languages are in threat of disappearing within this century. Already, countless art forms and other elements of linguistic knowledge have gone to the grave with the last of their practitioners. Sitting in one of the global centers of power and infuence as well as immigration from all areas of the world, we have the unique opportunity to put these cultures and languages in the spotlight.

This series will present oral and written literatures from historically marginalized, minoritized and endangered languages that are still largely unfamiliar to wider audiences.

Including a multimedia introduction to the peoples and languages presented, live readings of poetry and oral literature both traditional and modern by native speakers in these languages, and simultaneous projections of texts and translations.

Presented by the Endangered Language Alliance in conjunction with Bowery Arts and Science.
