New York Theatre Ballet At 92y  | Open: 01/09/15 Close: 01/11/15
New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) will perform at 92Y from January 9-11, 2014.  92Y is located at 1395 Lexington Avenue

The program will feature a revival of Sallie Wilson’s Romeo & Juliet Pas de Deux, originally choreographed for New York Theatre Ballet in 2004; A Rugged Flourish, choreography by Richard Alston; Game Two, choreography by Matthew Neenan; Rondo, choreography by Jerome Robbins; and Short Memory, choreography by Pam Tanowitz.

 RIOULT Dance NY, a leading American modern dance company with a classic sensibility, kicks off a year-long celebration of its 20th anniversary with performances on February 14-15, 2014 at 8pm at the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center (92nd Street and Lexington Avenue, NYC).  Tickets are $20 and are available at www.92Y.org/dance or 212.415.5500212.415.5500.

In 1992, The New York Times dance critic Jennifer Dunning wrote, “If Pascal Rioult keeps on creating the kinds of dances he has been choreographing with such authority for a mere three years, he may have to leave his job as a soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company and become a full-time choreographer.”  In 1994 Rioult officially incorporated his company.  Twenty years later, he will pay homage to his mentors May O’Donnell and Martha Graham with this unique program, providing insight to the evolution of an artist and an art form. It marks a rare opportunity to see the works of these dance pioneers in an intimate setting, complete with video montages exploring the relationships between the pieces. Additionally, the program also offers an exclusive sneak peak at part of what RIOULT will present at its 20th Anniversary New York Season this June.  

The program will open with a restaging of May O'Donnell's Suspension (1943) that has been set on the company by former May O’Donnell Dance Company dancers Lynn Frielinghaus, Barbara Allegra Verlezza, and Nancy Lushington.  The evening also includes Martha Graham’s El Penitente (1940) set to music by Louis Horst, with Mr. Rioult, Joyce Herring, and Kenneth Topping all teaching their former roles to current dancers.  Two pieces by Pascal Rioult complete the evening: Views of the Fleeting World (2008) set to J.S. Bach’s “The Art of Fugue” and Wien (1995) set to Maurice Ravel’s “La Valse.”

“I am thrilled to be presenting this program at the 92nd Street Y.  I began my work as a choreographer there, including the creation of Wien,” said Pascal Rioult, Artistic Director of RIOULT Dance NY.  “The evenings will honor two of my cherished mentors, May O’Donnell and Martha Graham, and will illustrate how their works have influence my choreography.”

El Penitente premiered in 1940 at Bennington College in Vermont, part of the Bennington School of the Dance, now the American Dance Festival. The dance has the look of primitive folk art come to life.  Born out of Martha Graham’s fascination with the American southwest and specifically a sect of Penitents who believed in purification through severe penance, the dance has a simple formalism, episodic structure, and naïve, archaic gestures. Constructed as a play within a play, El Penitente opens with the entrance of a troupe of strolling players.  They don their costumes and enact a series of vignettes from the Bible.  Audiences see a childlike pageant that includes flagellation, revelation, seduction, repentance, crucifixion, and salvation ― a stylized meshing of dance of celebration perhaps meant to inspire the generosity of the onlookers.

Suspension

The dancers move in a state of suspended balance and order in which the harmony is maintained by the independent patterns which join, separate, energize, and become tension points for each other to maintain the order and balance of the whole. The idea and ideal of Suspension uses the dance as a medium where harmony and balance are maintained between individuals. It might be said that Suspension is like the planetary system existing in space and eternity, where each planet maintains a position of independence and balance in relation to the whole.

 

Views of the Fleeting World was inspired by the ancient woodblock prints of the Japanese master Hiroshige and the ingenious structure of Bach’s musical score. The ephemeral quality of all living things and the eternal cycle of life are the themes that Rioult found common, and explored in this contemporary dance work. Each of the nine short vignettes – “Orchard,” “Gathering Storm,” “Wild Horses,” “Dusk, Rain,” “Night Ride,” “Summer Wind,” “Moonlight,” and “Flowing River” – captures a moment in time and nature through the colors, lines and rhythm of the dance. These moments reflect the depth of emotion that can be found in such seemingly spare and simple elements.

 

Wien turns the Viennese waltz’s revered image of grace, clarity and social refinement inside out, using it as a metaphor to expose the decadence and moral disintegration of a society. Six dancers create the illusion of an entire city, moving continuously in a large, clockwise path, alternating in their portrayal of victims violently swept to humiliation, imprisonment, and death, to aristocrats aloof and detached from the horrific reality.

Intermezzo Dance Company's Debut Performance Season  | Open: 10/18/13 Close: 10/20/13
INTERMEZZO Dance Company, a new ballet company founded by American Ballet Theatre soloist Craig Salstein, announces its debut performance season.  Performances will take place from October 18-20, 2013 at 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center, 1395 Lexington Avenue (between 91st and 92nd Streets), NYC.  Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at www.92Y.org/dance or 212.415.5500.  Performance schedule: Friday at 8pm, Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 3pm.  In addition, Intermezzo will show excerpts of new works participate in a Q&A as part of 92Y’s informal Fridays at Noon program on the 18th ($5). 

INTERMEZZO will offer a program celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi.  The Company will perform World Premiere ballets set to Verdi’s String Quartet in E-minor (the composer’s only surviving chamber work, written in 1873) and to a specially arranged suite of music from the Master's tuneful and dramatic opera Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball).  The pieces will feature live music by The Wyrick Quartet led by Eric Wyrick, concertmaster of the New Jersey Symphony.

“It’s not uncommon to see three or four Verdi operas at the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, and La Scala in one season.  His music is known to pull forth from the interpreter technique and passion, two words familiar to a dancer.  INTERMEZZO hopes to create a place in the dance world where the dancers’ technique and passion are drawn upon in new and vivid repertoire,” said Salstein.

Marcelo Gomes (ABT), Lisa de Ribere (formerly with New York City Ballet and with ABT), Adam Hendrickson (formerly with New York City Ballet), Gemma Bond (ABT), and Raymond Lukens (Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School) will choreograph works for an ensemble of vibrant dancers, including Stephen Hanna, Carlos Lopez, Kaitlyn Gilliland, Nadezhda Vostrikov, Shoshana Rosenfield, Sarah James, Amber Neff and Aran Bell. Charles Barker serves as Music Advisor.

ABOUT CRAIG SALSTEIN

Born in Miami, Florida, Craig Salstein began dancing at five years old with Mia Michaels and at age eleven became a student at the Miami City Ballet School.  He trained in summer programs at The Joffrey Ballet, the School of American Ballet and at American Ballet Theatre.  In 1999 he joined the Miami City Ballet and in 2000 joined American Ballet Theatre's Studio Company.  In 2002 he joined the corps de ballet of American Ballet Theatre and was promoted to Soloist in March 2007.  Salstein's repertory with the Company includes Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, the first sailor in Fancy Free, the Bronze Idol in La Bayadère, the Champion Roper in Rodeo, Twyla Tharp's In the Upper Room, Paul Taylor's Company B, He created leading roles in Alexi Ratmansky’s Symphony #9 and The Nutcracker.  In 2010 he choreographed for ABT’s “Innovative Initiative.”

In Kail's "Xylem" and "Arches," she collaborates with composer Jessica Lurie and visual artist Peter Bulow to craft a pair of memorable pieces which merge the visual and the auditory. "Xylem," named for a type of transport tissue in plants, explores the concept of newspapers as a symbolic language for a woman's complex emotional relationship with information and possibility. The piece includes highly original movement, humor and pathos, and couples everyday actions (such as scrubbing the floor) with objects that take on lives of their own.

Marrying text, video, movement and sound, "Arches" is a study in the interaction between a first-time mother, her new community, and her family. Interspersed with the performance itself is video footage taken by Bulow of a mother and child (Kail and her son) playing amid the arches, grass and trees in a local park. The dance begins with a gestural language accompanied by text, the sound of children and the taped conversations of other new parents. Kail then moves from a deeper physicality to music by Harry Partch and finally embraces the full space accompanied by the video footage of the arches and pathways of the park. "Arches" is the expression and celebration of the birth of Kail and Bulow's son Isaac.

In addition to Kail's two works, Popil will present and perform in her piece "Uninvited Guest." Described as a dance-poem, it reveals a world that is both private and exposed, through layers of text, sound and the inventive use of props. As the dancer sheds a series of protective skins, she embarks upon a journey that is at first nervous and erratic, becoming more pointed as she confronts her fears and reaches a new state of consciousness.

Kail and Popil plan to take their program to Philadelphia for a second performance. The New York debut of these key works by important faces in dance culture promises to be a magical evening in an intimate settinga fine venue with minimal sets and lighting.

About the Dancers/Choreographers

AMY KAIL's dances have been shown regularly at Dixon Place, Joyce SoHo, The Kitchen, Alice Tully Hall, and many other venues in New York City. Her latest choreographic work Barrier Reef was performed at the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center in 2009 as part of their "Women in Dance" festival. Amy is currently a teaching artist for Lincoln Center Institute and The Joyce Theater Educational program. Formerly, she was both staff and faculty at The 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center where she directed the "Fridays at Noon" program for ten years. Additionally, she is guest teacher at Brown University and other colleges, and was a regular facilitator for The Field, leading workshops for artists from various disciplines. Kail graduated from The Julliard School with a BFA in dance and is a MFA candidate at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

LESYA POPIL received her BFA from The University of The Arts in 2000 where she was awarded outstanding modern dancer and choreographer. In 2001 she proudly received her MFA from The University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Popil has danced for several Philadelphia companies and artists such as Group Motion Dance Company, JUNK, White Box Theater, Megan Bridge and Silvana Cardell. She has had the pleasure of dancing and presenting her work in New York and Philadelphia, as well as Japan, Poland, Lithuania and Africa. Popil serves as an adjunct professor at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ and is an active member of Mascher-Cooperative in Philadelphia.
