The Great Struggle For Cheap Meat  | Open: 05/18/13 Close: 05/18/13
Music by Michael Hickey / Libretto & direction by Ryan GilliamIn 1902, Jewish women on the Lower East Side organized themselves to do what women had never attempted before - a community boycott - to protest the high price of kosher meat. Creating picket lines in front of local butcher shops, recruiting help from tenement to tenement, the fight which they called 'The Great Struggle for Cheap Meat' was both earnest and chaotic: food fights in the streets, invasions of the male sections of the synagogues, front page headlines. Today the boycott is viewed as one of the earliest examples of women organizing in the U.S. and an inspiration for future generations. 'The Great Struggle for Cheap Meat', almost entirely set to music which draws from Jewish folk, 70's rock, and 20's jazz, is performed by a company of teen girls, many who live in the neighborhood today.

The Bowery Wars - Part 2  | Open: 04/29/12 Close: 05/06/12
The culmination of our 2-part rock musical tracing the lives of an immigrant Romeo and Juliet and the history of the Lower East Side, once the densest place on the face of the earth. In the fall of 1903, the battle for the Bowery between New York's two largest gangs - The Eastmans and The Five Pointers - reaches its climax; Tammany Hall is determined to come back from defeat and retake City Hall; and a young Italian and a young Russian Jew fall in love. The Bowery Wars looks at New York's history as a city divided: its promise, its corruption, its violence, and its efforts to remake itself. The entire performance takes place outdoors. Please dress warmly and bring an extra layer as some of the sites can be chilly in the shade. Act 1 is 45 minutes long and the audience is walking to multiple sites during this time. Act 2 is seated and shady. Act 1 meets at plaza located at 120 East 2nd Street between 1st Ave and Avenue A. Please arrive promptly. Act 2 takes place at 19 East 3rd Street. Unless it is actually raining heavily at the time of performance, the show will go on. For rain updates on the day of performance, you can call 212.479.0835.
