Rascals Cavorting  | Open: 09/07/12 Close: 09/16/12
Rascals Cavorting is exactly what it sounds like - a 90-minute show featuring world-class, mischievous dancers in an airborne and earthbound spectacle that will blow you away. Using movement to express powerful, radiant emotion, these dancers - who have performed around the globe - will take you on an epic journey through life and love.

The first act centers on the company's head Rascal, internationally renowned dancer and musician Dawn Hampton (recently featured in a PBS documentary).  Ms. Hampton instigates all manner of games and mischief, bringing dancers together in a changing spatial universe where they interact side by side both on the ground and in the air.  The second act is a modern love story, where trust is put to the test as dancers hurl themselves off ledges and into open space, depending on one another for safe landings. The tale is set to the music of L.A.-based Ozomatli, whose songs are a collision of myriad forms including East L.A. R&B, salsa, dancehall, Indian raga, and New Orleans brass.  Other featured musicians include Paul Tillotson and his Love Trio, and live performances by John Kruth of Tribecastan and banjo player Eli Spivak.

General Mischief's work includes both narrative stories and interactive dances. Audience members may be called upon to play Three-card Monte and “Follow the red hat,” or do The Wave and throw balls at the performers on cue.  After the evening performances, the audience is invited to take the stage and enjoy their own natural inclination to dance.  Musical guests incluse the Gordon Webster Trio on Friday, September 7 and the George Gee Swing Orchestra on Friday, September 14.

The fantastic cast of dancers includes Troy Barnes, Curtis Howard, Gia Lisa Krahne, Satomi Makida, Lisa Natoli, Andrea Skurr, Andrea Steiner, Carlos Taylor Jr., and Emily Smyth Vartanian.

About the Company: RUSSIAN ARTS THEATER & STUDIO (The RATS Company)

THE RATS THEATER COMPANY previously known as The Russian Arts Theater & Studio, the company was founded
in 2004 by Artistic Director Aleksey Burago and acclaimed actress Snezhana Chernova. The couple both graduated
from distinguished theater academies—namely, the Moscow Academy of Theater Arts (GITIS) and the St. Petersburgh
Academy of Theater Arts. They brought forward their extensive study and experience in hopes of creating a New York
theater company that would pass on the rich theater traditions and practices of Stanislavski and Michael Chekhov as well
as introducing lesser-known Russian repertoire to American audiences.

The company has provided many critically-acclaimed shows for the New York community, including adaptations, new
translations, short stories & plays---from Hans Christian Andersen to Anton Chekhov to Tennessee Williams. Most recent
acclaim went to ensemble member Danusia Trevino for her award-winning auto-biographical one-woman show, directed
by Artistic Director, Aleksey Burago.

In the early months of 2011, members of the current ensemble came forward to revamp and modernize the company
outlook to better reach contemporary audiences. A new repertory and educational program was developed, along with the
launch of the company's new website and name--The RATS Company (an acronym of the original company, as well as a
vivid theater emblem--the beloved 'theater rat'). RATS is a 501(c)(3) educational organization, a New York City ensemble
theater company and school that puts up beautiful dramas rooted in movement and the arts: From world classics to
intimate new works.
