Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John's Passion is a dramatic treatment of the finals days of the earthly life of Jesus Christ. Shorter and less elaborate than his other great Holy Week work, the St. Matthew Passion, it highlights the importance of the chorale in Bach's mind.

Mozart's contrapuntal skill, although used to great advantage in string quartets, symphonies and operas, becomes showcased, so to speak, in complex fugues in choral sections of this Mass.
