The historic Mabel Tainter Theatre in Menomonie, WI is mounting a production of the award winning musical that celebrates the life of a pioneer girl and her family. It will be the inaugural production of Red Cedar Youth Theatre, and is a community collaboration. The show will run from Sept 17th-20th. The intent is to produce it every 2 or 3 years to attract tourism to the area.
Caddie's real name was Caroline Augusta Woodhouse. It was Woodhouse's granddaughter, Carol Ryrie Brink, who wrote the original children's novel that won the 1936 Newberry Medal, awarded each year for outstanding children's literature. Brink was Susan Eiden's grandmother. Eiden and Shelton wrote the musical, but had to earn the approval of the Brink estates executor (Eidens mother, Nora Caroline Hunter) before it could be produced.
The story told in the novel is based on the real life of the Woodhouse family, whose father had to choose between returning to England and wealth, or staying in the Midwest and creating a “brand new country”. The book is on 5th grade reading lists around the country.
The Musical is a full-length adaptation of the novel. It was a recipient of the Landers Theatre National Playwriting Award, resulting in productions of at the Landers Theatre in Springfield, Missouri, at First Stage Milwaukee in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and various other venues across the country.
The script and score have been updated for the musicals Menomonie run.
The script is owned and licensed by STN Productions in Los Angeles, CA
