Why would the Watchman who wears a watch that won’t work sit silent sentry in a graveyard and wordlessly wait, and wait, and wait? And what about Lewis, who shatters the serenity after stumbling from a slumber at the soles of the Watchman’s feet? Where does he think he’s heading? Nowhere fast, if the Watchman has his way. And then there’s Anne with the bandaged hands. What drew her to this dark corner of the universe? And, why does she keep insisting she knows everybody? It’s so annoying. Why won’t any of them move on? What in the world are they all waiting for?

Through innovative, and moving art, FOR de ARTS hopes to penetrate the wall of ignorance and lift the human experience.
The Roundtable: "It just takes one woman to walk in another woman’s shoes. What would happen if nine women, unbelievably different in their social, political and spiritual views were to meet for an unexpected encounter that just might change their lives forever? In her new play The Roundtable, Sarah Kiefer, in a tour de force performance, transforms herself to explore them all; as the Midwestern soccer mom, the homeless crack addict, the wise grandmother, the Korean valley girl, the glamour queen and others, who come together to be seen and heard without fear, shame, or a firestorm of hatred. Instead they find their varied views are all valid and each a decent person in her own life journey."
All of Me: The comedic one woman show is inspired by the writer/performer's life as an African American Woman struggling to fit in to preset notions of what an African American Woman should be. In 45 minutes, the audience meets 4 characters and journeys through 10 years of growth and finally acceptance, as Tanesha deftly weaves comedy with disturbing truths in this exciting and thought provoking show. All of Me includes poignant and hilarious characters such as Bonnie Ree, the 64 year mother who sits on the front porch making running commentaries on the decline of her neighborhood, and to Tanesha's own "experience" as a first-time member of the Support Group, "Welcome B.L.A.C.C" (Black League Against Caucasoid Characteristics).

** Equity approved Showcase.

For the past three years at, in a tiny little black box in the East Village called Wow Café Theatre, Ashley Brockington has presented, Black Girl Ugly (BGU), a performance piece that digs deep into the psych of the little Black Girl. Each year three different actresses investigate how their girlhood experiences have impacted their adult lives as Black Women in the United States. The result is an honest telling of the World of Black Folk. Sometimes hilarious. Sometimes tragic.
This year marks the fourth installment of BGU and features Beatrice Anderson, Sokhna Heathyre Mabin, and Ginger Spencer. The actresses are equal collaborators in the creative process.
Theatreonline.com reflects upon 2010’s BGU as a show that “could have become an easy performance piece, re-affirming the inherent beauty in Black women by resorting to bumper sticker-isms and 'Come to Jesus' softheaded resolutions. But thanks to the intelligence, vision and humor of the performers, the play rolls along with jokes that counterpunch against the bleakness, and stories that shed new light on old problems.”
BGU aims to give a voice to the Black women experience, and reconstruct truths that more accurately reflect Black women.
Ks Stevens’ world premiere, The Scene, will take place at the WOW Cafe Theatre, in New York City, on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. The show goes up just in time to kick-off Folsom Street East and Pride in New York City.
The Scene is a new play by Ks Stevens about the BDSM community. This play creates an open dialogue between key Players and poignantly discusses the five distinct roots and journies that led these individuals to The Scene. They share their personal accounts of discovery, navigating their journies, and finding acceptance within the lifestyle. The Players include the Mistress, Girl, Switch, Boi andDaddy.
The Players are Essence Alexander, Sharon Jane Smith, Chiquita Brooks, Gayle Robbins and Ks Stevens
In this salute to Queer Pride, HyperGender Burlesque will bring you some beloved burlesqueers who will excite you, shock and make you feel at home among the strange, the bizarre and the campy. Following the Dyke March and before the Pride Parade what a better way to warm up for the all night debauchery but with help of sexy, naked queers.
Gay marriage debate has been going on for a while now and has queers split - do we fight for this antiquated institution or do we embrace the fact that we shall always be deemed "different"? Refusing to jump in the middle of the debate HyperGender raises another question - if almost half of all marriages end up in a divorce, why don't we have right to a divorce?
This show is a celebration of an amicable separation and it is the final show for our beloved N as HyperGender's co-host. Come bid her well on her journey to new and unexplored lands and a very happy birthday! Make sure to have a drink or two and save some room for cake. Be ready to be adopted by our dysfunctional family.

About the Company: HyperGender Burlesque
HyperGender began with a hope and a dream....and on Saturday April 14th 2007...that dream became a reality. As burlesque is getting more and more mainstreamed and as "post" is new "neo" we are proud to be the first post-neo-burlesque show. Two years after its conception HyperGender Burlesque is one of the leading monthly reviews and has gained a reputation for providing experimental and thought provoking entertainment.
HyperGender's mission is to titillate you, taunt you and tease you with a different variety of political and performance art. This is not your average burlesque show as it features video, drag, and performance art.
We are a monthly THEME review that features new and established burlesque performers, videographers, poets, sideshow artists and the pulse of NYC's underground artist community. Our themes range from Shakespeare, masturbation and the ever famed Seven Deadly Sins.
HyperGender is housed at historic WOW Cafe Theatre in the heart of NYC's East Village. The show is rated NC-17 for full frontal nudity and other things that bump in the night. We are daring for a reason, provocative because we have to....we want to show the NYC is still raw, edgy and beautiful all at the same time. This is a direct answer to Disneyfication of New York City.
A big reason for performers to come to us is our willingness and ability to offer complete creative freedom in a safe environment. This allows a free platform for exchange of ideas with no limits and boundaries. HyperGender encourages acts that are controversial, smart, and most importantly, ART! We strive to create this each and every month.
HyperGender has been a pick of the month for GO Magazine and Time Out New York

Hypergender Burlesque Presents: "3" Hypergender's 3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!
It all started with a hope and a dream. On Saturday April 14th 2007 that dream became a reality. Three years later HyperGender has grown bigger and older but it still shines bright. Listening to our audience's nominations we have invited some all time favorites to help us celebrate our birthday. Housed in historic WOW Cafe Theater, HyperGender has proven to be a fertile ground for burlesque experimentation. While some questioned if some of our acts were burlesque, we questioned if you dared to define us. Still undefinable and edgy, we ask you to join us and help us with blowing ... birthday candles that is!

The money is tight and the jobs are not here. The unemployment benefits are ending. Last year started with hope and promise of change, this one starts with a need for some spare change. So what is one to do? HyperGender says strip out of your old clothes and spring into 2010 ... nude! If you happen to be rich come and wish happy new year to unfortunate masses ... if you are poor come and spend last few pennies to watch some starving and formerly employed artist drop their pants for you! What a better way to start the new year than with a tongue in a cheek show that will make you laugh, make you hot and make you beg for more!

Somewhere between Thanksgiving and New Year's catch HyperGender's "Gluttony", celebration of excess and rampant commercialism. Holidays have traditions and HyperGender has a tradition of analyzing, defying and corrupting the holiday season. What is it that many holidays have in common, the mad geniuses of HGB asked? Consumption! We came out of Halloween that focused on buying candy and costumes and headed to Thanksgiving. The weekend where we expand our bellies with the amounts of food we never thought we could eat supplemented by mass hysteria of Black Friday when we are sent of to revive the still ailing economy by spending the last few pennies left on trinkets we don't need. Next we start looking toward Christmas and wonder how many useless gifts can we buy. Of course, in true spirit of neo imperialism we will also be able to purchase Hannukkah, Kwanzaa and Eid Al Adha merch, anything to get us to spend, consume and devour.
So where is burlesque, you ask? We at HyperGender believe you should take your hard earned - or provided by the government, pennies and donate them to our ailing economy. We will make you laugh and think and turn you on. There will be romance and critique and chocolate covered boobies, who needs strawberries when one has nipples? And who knows, you may even think of some creative gifts that don't come mass produced and prepackaged! So join us for some hot toddies and debauchery on December 5th!

Corey (Ashley Brockington) recently graduated with her MSW and needs to complete her therapy hours for her license. She creates Butch Mamas! a therapy group for butch lesbians who want to become mamas! Little does she know, but she has created the perfect breeding ground for dysfunctional lesbians to process butch identity, parenting, failed relationships, and alternative ways to have children and make families. The hilarity ensues when the only consistent participants include a Teagan (Gayle Robbins) and Cassie (Jin-Xiang “Jx” Yu), a couple who broke up 6 years ago, without closer. In attendance are Robin (Cassie’s wife played by Minna Taylor), Alma (Lea Robinson), a lawyer and single woman looking for a surrogate, and Jasper (Micia Mosely), an AG who can’t get enough of being around her butch mamas, and Shay (Michael Abourizk) and Kelp (Becca Zaretzky), their well intentioned eccentric admirers.

Black Girl Ugly
It ain't easy comin' up Black not to mention female, in these so-called United States. Have you ever considered how difficult it is to cultivate a healthy self-image growing up surrounded by the superficial din of white media? In Black Girl Ugly Ashley Brockington, Lee Avant & Nicole Cain take you into the collective subconscious of Black Girls trying to hold fast to their love of self.
Through movement, poetry and song, they contrast growing up surrounded by the "truth" of white girl beauty while living in the reality of Black Girl Ugly. True to their legacy these artists offer no clean endings in this story of black girl victory. The contra-fictions linger and always will.
