One of Moscow’s leading theatre companies will perform Ivanov, Chekhov’s first play, a dazzling mix of comedy, satire, and psychological drama,  at New York City Center (131 W. 55th Street) for a special limited engagement June 14th through June 17th. Evgeny Mironov stars as Ivanov,  an antihero and melancholic upper-class man who is struggling to regain his former glory.  This award winning production directed by Timofey Kulyabin premiered in Moscow and was nominated for the prestigious Golden Mask National Theatre Award (equivalent of the Tony Award) in multiple categories.

 

The Cherry Orchard Festival, co-founded by Maria Shclover and Irina Shabshis, is presenting this Russian State Theatre of Nations production in Russian with English supertitles.

New York Premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s 27 explores the relationship between Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, who hosted regular salon evenings at their Paris home at 27 Rue de Fleurus, with such guests as Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Man Ray, Henri Matisse and Ernest Hemingway. Commissioned by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, 27 received its world premiere in June 2014. For the New York Premiere, Ricky Ian Gordon has specially added new sections for the MasterVoices chorus.

New York, NY – New York City’s famed MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) – founded in 1941 by legendary conductor Robert Shaw – will celebrate its 75th anniversary during the 2016-2017 season. The Anniversary Season begins in October with the New York premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s 27 - specially adapted for MasterVoices - followed by Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion in February, and concludes with Victor Herbert’s Babes in Toyland in April.

 

Following this past season’s successful partnership with New York City Center, MasterVoices is pleased to return there for the New York premiere of 27. A new English translation of the St. John Passion and the first major revival of Babes in Toyland in New York City in over 85 years will be performed at Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall.

 

MasterVoices is very pleased to announce that Ted Sperling has renewed his contract as Artistic Director of MasterVoices through 2019. He will conduct all three productions in MasterVoices’ Anniversary Season.

Bach's St. John Passion is considered by many to be more dramatic and expressive than his popular St. Matthew Passion.  Based on text from the Gospel of St. John, Bach’s choral masterpiece reflects on the last days of Christ.  To pay tribute to MasterVoices’ founder Robert Shaw, who held the belief that the Passions should speak directly to audiences in English, and that these concerts should be communal experiences, the performance will be given in a modern-day English translation, and MasterVoices will invite the audience to sing along with the chorales, filling Carnegie Hall with music from all directions.

A huge hit when it premiered in New York in 1903, Victor Herbert’s Babes in Toyland hasn’t seen a major revival in New York City in over 85 years.  Full of glorious melodies, Babes in Toyland tells a story that is both amusing and scary: villainous Uncle Barnaby plots the deaths of his young niece and nephew, Alan and Jane, in order to gain their inheritance.  After many twists and turns, the siblings, with the help of several Mother Goose characters, thwart his efforts and bring happiness back to Toyland.  MasterVoices will present the original score in its full orchestration, giving the audience a rare chance to experience this musical extravaganza afresh.

 

“Victor Herbert was by far the most popular and successful composer in America at the turn of the 20th Century - not just ‘Andrew Lloyd Webber successful,’ but ‘Beatles popular!’ His music for Babes in Toyland is widely considered among his very best, with familiar titles like ‘Toyland’ and ‘The March of the Toys,’ and also stirring instrumental pieces to accompany shipwrecks, attacks by giant spiders, and the making of deadly potions. A multi-faceted artist, he is a director, music director, conductor, orchestrator, singer, pianist, violinist and violist. He is the Artistic Director of MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) and Principal Conductor of the Westchester Philharmonic. MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) was founded in 1941 by the legendary American choral conductor Robert Shaw, and is currently under the artistic direction of Ted Sperling. For 75 years, the company has presented varied programming, with emphasis in three areas: choral masterpieces, operas in concert, and musical theater. Choral classics performed by MasterVoices have included Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and St. John Passion, Brahms’ Requiem, Britten’s War Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s The Creation, Mozart’s Requiem, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Verdi’s Requiem. Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL) is one of America’s most versatile and distinguished orchestras, collaborating with the world’s greatest artists and performing approximately 80 concerts each year—including its Carnegie Hall Orchestra Series, Chamber Music Series at The Morgan Library & Museum and Brooklyn Museum, and summer residency at Caramoor Music Festival. Renowned opera singer and recitalist, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe is considered one of the most highly respected and critically acclaimed artists of her generation. Her repertoire ranges from Handel to Wagner, German lieder to contemporary and classic American song. She has sung in many of the renowned opera houses in the US and Europe including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Seattle Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and the Opera National de Paris. Stunning audiences with her sterling lyric soprano voice and incisive stage personality, American soprano Heidi Stober has established herself as a house favorite with leading companies on both sides of the Atlantic. Tenor Theo Lebow began 2015 with a very successful return to Seattle Opera as Jupiter and Apollo in Handel’s Semele. The Seattle Times praised him for his “Tonal beauty, alacrity, and commendable passagework.” In the spring of 2015, Mr. Lebow sang a wide variety of concert and recital engagements, including a debut with The German Forum, and a return to The New York Festival of Song for concerts at both Merkin Hall, New York City, and Washington DC’s Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. He also sang Schubert’s Die Winterreise at the Gretna Music Festival with the Henschel String Quartet, a performance later broadcast on NPR. A notable success was Mr. Lebow’s debut in May 2014 with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in the roles of Picasso and F. Scott Fitzgerald in the World Premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s opera 27. Baritone Tobias Greenhalgh is a versatile singer on the rise, whom Opera News recently claimed was “so clearly headed for success.” Most recent credits include the title role in Eugene Onegin, Argante in Rinaldo, Cecco in Gli Uccelatori, Le Directeur/ Gendarme in Les Mamelles de Tiresias, and Ramiro in L’heure Espagnole at the Wiener Kammeroper in Vienna. Tobias also sang the role of Schaunard in La bohème with Palm Beach Opera and Argante in Rinaldo at the New Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Upcoming engagements include Carmina Burana with the Noord Nederlands Orkest, a leading role in an upcoming production for the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus at the Franz Lehàr Festival at Bad Ischl, Ned Keene in Peter Grimes and Littore/Tribune in L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Theater an der Wien, Escamillo in Carmen, The Father in Hansel and Gretel at the Wiener Kammeroper, and Morales in Carmen with Palm Beach Opera. Bass-baritone, Daniel Brevik, raised in the small town of Holliston, Massachusetts, grew up playing football, delivering newspapers and singing Sinatra tunes. During his studies at Plymouth State University, Brevik started singing with the Chamber Singers, and under the superb direction of Dr. Daniel Perkins, toured the U.S., Vietnam, and Italy. The New England Conservatory soon awarded him the Wendy Shattuck Presidential Scholarship for his studies in opera. Although his experience in opera was limited, his coaches and teachers, combined with hard work, helped him learn fast. After receiving his masters from NEC, Danny was hired as a member of the 2013 Gerdine Young Artist program at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. There he proved a stand-out during his first engagement with the company and was rehired as the “Android” for OTSL’s The Very Last Green Thing. OTSL later asked him to become a soloist in their artist-in-residence program where he showcased his skills in Opera, Musical Theater, Jazz, Country Music and R&B at schools around St. Louis. In 2014, he premiered the roles of Henri Matisse and Ernest Hemmingway in Ricky Ian Gordon’s 27. Brevik brought his special blend of music, travel and song to Moldavia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand in his quest to spread the joy of music to third world countries. American stage director James Robinson is Artistic Director at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, where he has mounted productions including Chin’s Alice in Wonderland (American premiere), Ash’s The Golden Ticket (world premiere), Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles (also presented at the Wexford Festival), and Adams’ The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China (a production seen throughout the United States and Canada). Elsewhere, Robinson has directed new productions for Houston Grand Opera (Lucia di Lammermoor, Giulio Cesare and Abduction from the Seraglio), San Francisco Opera (Norma, Il trittico and L’elisir d’amore) and the Canadian Opera Company (Norma, Elektra and Nixon in China). Michael Slattery made his unforgettable New York Philharmonic debut in November 2013, stepping in at the last minute to sing the Britten Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings for the Philharmonic’s celebrations of Benjamin Britten’s 100th birthday. “It could not have been more triumphant," wrote The Examiner, "Brilliantly acted, his performance was bursting with spirit as he trumpeted his arrival. He took his bows to an enthusiastic audience who welcomed him with thunderous applause.” Slattery rejoined the Philharmonic in their 2014-15 season as the tenor soloist in Handel's Messiah. His performances have included the world premiere of The Grapes of Wrath at Minnesota Opera, Bernstein’s MASS at London’s Royal Festival Hall, various productions with Boston Early Music Festival, and featured roles with Atlanta Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Utah Opera, and Boston Lyric Opera. Recital highlights include appearances with the Marilyn Horne Foundation, New York Festival of Song, and Mirror Visions Ensemble. Latonia Moore is an American soprano of African-American ancestry. She first studied gospel and jazz, until one of her teachers at the University of North Texas convinced her to study classical music. Moore made her debut in 1998 at the Palm Beach Opera in West Palm Beach, and was engaged as a student in the same year at the Houston Ebony Opera. In 2000 she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Moore attracted critical praise for her 2008 performance with the Opera Orchestra of New York in Puccini’s Edgar. In March 2012, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut as a late replacement for Violeta Urmana on short notice as Aïda in a live broadcast. Moore is featured on commercial recordings of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (Deutsche Grammophon) and of Verdi’s Macbeth (sung in English, Chandos). In January 2016, Moore performed for the newly revived New York City Opera in Puccini’s Tosca at the Rose Theater in Lincoln Center. In April 2016, she sang the lead role of Cio-Cio San in San Diego Opera’s performance of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, garnering critical recognition for her acting, her “rich, supple and multi-octave soprano voice” and vocal interpretation.

 

This season, mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford appears in the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Kajia Saariaho's L'amour de loin and appears in concert with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, and the Simón Bolívar Orchestra on tour in Europe. A graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Ms. Mumford made her debut there as Laura in Luisa Miller, and has since appeared in more than 140 performances with the company. She has also appeared at the Dallas Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Glyndebourne Opera Festival and the BBC Proms. In concert, she has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, and Milwaukee symphony orchestras; the Hollywood Bowl, and the Ravinia, Tanglewood, Grand Teton, Vail, and La Jolla Summer Music festivals. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2005 as part of the Richard Goode and friends concert series in Zankel Hall, and has been presented in recital in New York by both the Marilyn Horne Foundation and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in Philadelphia by the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.

 

American tenor Ben Bliss is a 2016 recipient of the Martin E. Segal award at Lincoln Center, awarded by the Metropolitan Opera.  He was also the recipient of the Mozart and Plácido Domingo awards at the 2015 Francisco Viñas International Competition in Barcelona, receiving 2nd place overall, first prize in the 2014 Gerda Lissner and Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation competitions, as well as a Sara Tucker and Sullivan Foundation grant. Mr. Bliss is also the 2013 Operalia Don Plácido Domingo Sr. Zarzuela prizewinner. MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) will open its 75th anniversary season with Ricky Ian Gordon's 27, with libretto by Royce Vavrek, starring Stephanie Blythe, Heidi Stober, Theo Lebow, Tobias Greenhalgh, and Daniel Brevik, conducted by Ted Sperling, and directed by James Robinson, with Orchestra of St. Luke’s on October 20 and 21, 2016 at New York City Center.

 

27 explores the relationship between Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, who hosted regular salon evenings at their Paris home at 27 Rue de Fleurus, with such guests as Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Man Ray, Henri Matisse and Ernest Hemingway. Originally commissioned by Opera Theater of St. Louis, 27 received its world premiere in June 2014. For the New York Premiere, Ricky Ian Gordon has expanded portions of the opera originally sung by a small male ensemble and re-scored them for the full MasterVoices chorus.

Toklas felt towards Gertrude, and her desire to be recognized as her wife in an era where that was not possible. I ended up creating a new version, wherein I did nothing to what the actual cast does, but added the chorus to both augment and enhance some moments, and invent others. Now it feels like an entirely new opera to me, more epic, less intimate, but fresh and independent. I am very happy to premiere this new version with MasterVoices and Ted Sperling,” Gordon said.

Bass-baritone, Daniel Brevik, raised in the small town of Holliston, Massachusetts, grew up playing football, delivering newspapers and singing Sinatra tunes. During his studies at Plymouth State University, Brevik started singing with the Chamber Singers, and under the superb direction of Dr. Daniel Perkins, toured around The U.S., Vietnam, and Italy. Brevik was soon awarded the Wendy Shattuck Presidential Scholarship by the New England Conservatory for his studies in opera. Although his experience in opera was limited, his coaches and teachers, combined with hard work helped him to learn fast. After receiving his masters from NEC, Danny was hired as a member of the 2013 Gerdine Young Artist program at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Danny proved to be a stand-out during his first engagement with OTSL and was rehired as the “Android” for OTSL’s The Very Last Green Thing. OTSL later asked him to become a soloist in their artist in residence program where he got to showcase his skills in Opera, Musical Theater, Jazz, Country Music and R&B at schools around St. Louis. In 2014, the role of 27's Henri Matisse/Ernest Hemmingway was written for Brevik, and as a result, he got to perform in the world premiere. Brevik continued his quest of sharing music, traveling and singing all over Moldova, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, on a mission of spreading the joy of music to third world countries. MasterVoices presents the New York Premiere of 27  | Open: 10/20/16 Close: 10/21/16
 MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) will celebrate its 75th anniversary during the 2016-2017 season, beginning with the New York premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek’s 27, specially adapted for MasterVoices, on October 20 and 21, 2016 at 8pm at New York City Center, 131 W. 55th Street, New York City. MasterVoices’ production of 27 will be semi-staged, and will feature the direction of James Robinson, conducting by MasterVoices’ Artistic Director Ted Sperling, the 150 singers of MasterVoices, and Orchestra of St. Luke’s. The cast features Metropolitan Opera mezzo Stephanie Blythe as Gertrude Stein, and up-and-coming soprano Heidi Stober as Alice B. Toklas, Theo Lebow, Tobias Greenhalgh, and Daniel Brevik. The production will include scenic design by Allen Moyer, costume design by James Schuette, and lighting design by James F. Ingalls.

“When I pitched the piece to Ted Sperling and MasterVoices,” said Ricky Ian Gordon, 27’s composer, “it was because I heard in my head a way of expanding the texture of the three-man chorus to full chorus, in a way that I felt beautiful and exciting, and in no way robbed from the integrity of the piece. I ended up creating a new version, wherein I did nothing to what the actual cast does, but added the chorus to both augment and enhance some moments, and invent others. Now it feels like an entirely new opera to me, more epic, less intimate, but fresh and independent. I am very happy to premiere this new version with MasterVoices and Ted Sperling.”

MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) was founded in 1941 by the legendary American choral conductor Robert Shaw, and is currently under the artistic direction of Ted Sperling. For 75 years, the company has presented varied programming, with emphasis in three areas: choral masterpieces, operas in concert, and musical theater. Tenor Theo Lebow began 2015 with a very successful return to Seattle Opera as Jupiter and Apollo in Handel’s Semele. The Seattle Times praised him for his “Tonal beauty, alacrity, and commendable passagework.” In the spring of 2015, Mr. Lebow sang a wide variety of concert and recital engagements, including a debut with The German Forum, and a return to The New York Festival of Song for concerts at both Merkin Hall, New York City, and Washington DC’s Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. He also sang Schubert’s Die Winterreise at the Gretna Music Festival with the Henschel String Quartet, a performance later broadcast on NPR. A notable success was Mr. Lebow’s debut in May 2014 with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in the roles of Picasso and F. Scott Fitzgerald in the World Premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s opera 27. Tobias also sang the role of Schaunard in La bohème with Palm Beach Opera and Argante in Rinaldo at the New Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Bass-baritone, Daniel Brevik, raised in the small town of Holliston, Massachusetts, grew up playing football, delivering newspapers and singing Sinatra tunes. During his studies at Plymouth State University, Brevik started singing with the Chamber Singers, and under the superb direction of Dr. Daniel Perkins, toured the U.S., Vietnam, and Italy. The New England Conservatory soon awarded him the Wendy Shattuck Presidential Scholarship for his studies in opera. Although his experience in opera was limited, his coaches and teachers, combined with hard work, helped him learn fast. After receiving his masters from NEC, Danny was hired as a member of the 2013 Gerdine Young Artist program at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. American stage director James Robinson is Artistic Director at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, where he has mounted productions including Chin’s Alice in Wonderland (American premiere), Ash’s The Golden Ticket (world premiere), Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles (also presented at the Wexford Festival), and Adams’ The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China (a production seen throughout the United States and Canada). Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek’s scintillating new opera 27 explores Gertrude Stein’s relationship with her lifelong partner Alice B. Toklas and the artists who visited their Paris salon at 27 Rue de Fleurus. The production will star Metropolitan Opera mezzo Stephanie Blythe as Stein, and Heidi Stober, an up-and-coming soprano, as Toklas. The cast also features Theo Lebow, Tobias Greenhalgh, and Daniel Brevik. James Robinson will direct and MasterVoices’ Artistic Director Ted Sperling will conduct 150 singers of MasterVoices and Orchestra of St. Luke’s. The production will include scenic design by Allen Moyer, costume design by James Schuette, and lighting design by James F. Ingalls.

 

“MasterVoices is delighted to provide New York audiences with the opportunity to hear the singular Stephanie Blythe recreate the role of Gertrude Stein and to be working with the radiant Heidi Stober (Alice B. MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) was founded in 1941 by the legendary American choral conductor Robert Shaw, and is currently under the artistic direction of Ted Sperling. For 75 years, the company has presented varied programming, with emphasis in three areas: choral masterpieces, operas in concert, and musical theater. MasterVoices (formerly The Collegiate Chorale) continues the 2015-2016 season with Henry Purcell and Nahum Tate’s tempestuous Baroque opera, Dido and Aeneas, on April 28, 2016 at 7pm and April 29, 2016 at 8pm at New York City Center, 131 W. 55th Street, New York City.  The performance will feature a World Premiere prologue to Dido and Aeneas by Michael John LaChiusa (The Wild Party, First Daughter Suite) that presents the three Fates that control Dido’s destiny.  MasterVoices’ production of Dido and Aeneas will be semi-staged, and will feature the direction and choreography of Doug Varone, the dancers of his company Doug Varone and Dancers, conducting by MasterVoices’ Artistic Director Ted Sperling, the MasterVoices chorus, and Orchestra of St. Luke’s.  The cast, hailing from both the Broadway and opera worlds, is comprised of Kelli O’Hara (Tony Award Winner, The King and I) as Dido, Victoria Clark (Tony Award Winner, The Light in the Piazza) as the Sorceress, Elliot Madore (Winner of the 2010 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions) as Aeneas, and Anna Christy (Les contes d’Hoffmann, the Metropolitan Opera) as Belinda.  Set design by David Korins (Hamilton, Bel Canto).

 

“We are thrilled to reunite Tony Award-winning actresses Kelli O’Hara and Victoria Clark for the first time since their history-making performances in The Light in the Piazza ten years ago in Dido and Aeneas,” said Ted Sperling, Artistic Director of MasterVoices. “Further, the evening will open with the World Premiere of a new prologue written and composed by Michael John LaChiusa, in which the three leading ladies play the three Fates, sisters who control our destinies. As the original prologue was lost, I called on my long-time collaborator to bring a contemporary voice into counterpoint with the Baroque, utilizing the same orchestration, including an expanded continuo section of harpsichord, organ, guitar and harp. Orchestrations for the new prologue are by Bruce Coughlin.”

Kelli O’Hara has unequivocally established herself as one of Broadway’s great leading ladies. Her portrayal of Anna Leonowens in the critically acclaimed revival of The King and I recently garnered her a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, along with Drama League and Outer Critics nominations.

2014 was an exceptionally busy year. Her performance as Francesca in the musical adaptation of The Bridges of Madison County earned her Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle nominations. Victoria Clark maintains one of the most diverse careers of any artist living today, equally at home in plays, musicals, film, television, and the concert stage. She most recently starred in the 2015 revival of GIGI The Musical on Broadway where she received a Tony Award nomination for her role as “Mamita.” In 2014, starred as Marie, The Fairy Godmother in the Broadway musical revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella where she received both Tony and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations. Clark also starred in Sharr White’s play, The Snow Geese at the Manhattan Theatre Club. Prior to that, she appeared as Mother Superior in the hit Broadway musical, Sister Act for which she received Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations and the Drama League honor. Last year, Ms. Clark was the Artist in Residence at Pace University’s School of the Arts where she taught and directed The Light in the Piazza for which she had received Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards, as well as a Drama League honor for her portrayal of protective but domineering mother Margaret Johnson in 2005. Award-winning choreographer and director Doug Varone works in dance, theater, opera, film, television and fashion. He is a passionate educator and articulate advocate for dance. By any measure, his work is extraordinary for its emotional range, kinetic breadth and the many arenas in which he works. His New York City-based Doug Varone and Dancers has been commissioned and presented to critical acclaim by leading international venues for nearly three decades. In 2008, Varone’s Bottomland, set in the Mammoth Caves of Kentucky, was the subject of the PBS Dance in America: Wolf Trap’s Face of America. In opera, he is best known for the Metropolitan Opera productions of Salome, with its sensational Dance of the Seven Veils for Karita Mattila, and the world premiere of Tobias Picker’s An American Tragedy. His numerous theater credits include his choreography for Manhattan Theater Club's musical hit Murder Ballad earned him a Lucille Lortel nomination for choreography. Film credits include choreography for the Patrick Swayze film One Last Dance. Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL) is one of America’s most versatile and distinguished orchestras, collaborating with the world’s greatest artists and performing approximately 80 concerts each year—including its Carnegie Hall Orchestra Series, Chamber Music Series at The Morgan Library & Museum and Brooklyn Museum, and summer residency at Caramoor Music Festival. The 2015-2016 season will conclude in June with a program featuring a World Premiere work, with music by Marisa Michelson and libretto by Royce Vavrek, developed for the launch of MasterVoices’ new community outreach program, Bridges.

New York, NY (August 3, 2015) – New York City’s famed Collegiate Chorale – founded in 1941 by legendary conductor Robert Shaw – announced four strategic initiatives that position the organization for its next phase of performing excellence:
• A new name – MasterVoices – to reflect a broadening and deepening of artistic vision;
• A new partnership with New York City Center, featuring concert performances of operettas and operas in English, debuting with The Pirates of Penzance and Dido and Aeneas;
• A revival of the organization's commitment to commissioning new work, with world premieres this season by Michael John LaChiusa and Marisa Michelson; and
• A new outreach program, “Bridges,” in which MasterVoices will engage with a community in the New York City area each season to create and perform a newly commissioned work and explore creative performing spaces throughout the five boroughs.

A new name for a new era

“I’m very excited by the changes we are making this year,” said Ted Sperling, Artistic Director of MasterVoices. “Our new name more accurately reflects what we have become: a performing arts organization which celebrates storytelling through the masterful voices of our chorus, our world-class soloists, and the creative voices of the composers, librettists, designers and directors whose work we produce. MasterVoices has developed a family of guest artists who are extremely versatile, crossing the porous boundary between opera and musical theater with ease. We are delighted to be starting a partnership with City Center, whose capabilities will allow us to heighten the theatricality of our presentations. And our commissioning new work for both City Center and our new outreach program, Bridges, is a return to a long-standing tradition of the group that has lain dormant for too long. With these new initiatives, MasterVoices enters a new era with renewed vigor and energy.”

MasterVoices is building upon The Collegiate Chorale’s preeminent reputation for its interpretations of the traditional choral repertoire, vocal works by American composers, and rarely heard operas-in-concert, commissions and premieres. The chorus has worked with great luminaries of the music world, singing under conductors Leonard Bernstein, Alan Gilbert, James Levine, Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti, along with many others. Some of the renowned artists with whom The Chorale has worked in recent seasons include Jamie Barton, Stephanie Blythe, Victoria Clark, Nathan Gunn, Thomas Hampson, Angela Meade, Kelli O’Hara, Roger Rees, Bryn Terfel and Deborah Voigt. Recent seasons’ highlights have included Eric Owens in Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele with the Manhattan Girls Chorus at Carnegie Hall; David Lang’s battle hymns with members of the Veteran Artist Program and the Manhattan Girls at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum; Eric Idle in Not The Messiah; and the U.S. Premiere of Kurt Weill’s The Road of Promise featuring Anthony Dean Griffey, Mark Delavan and Ron Rifkin with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Carnegie Hall.

A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes was developed in The New Georges Jam, a “performance gym” for early-career playwrights and directors. The play originally premiered in May 2014 as part of the New Georges Jam On Toast play festival at Dixon Place. Great Lakes is Kate Benson’s first produced play.

Rugantino, one of Italy’s most successful musicals, comes to New York City Center to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its Broadway debut. The show stars Italy’s top comedian Enrico Brignano as Rugantino, with 50 actors, dancers and singers, including Armando Silverini, who played Cardinal Severini in the original production.  The tour will bring eight containers of equipment including updated costumes and hand-painted sets that were restored from the original production.

 

Set in 19th century Rome, Rugantino tells the story of a fun-loving rogue who has plenty of ruganza, or arrogance. When he makes a bet that he can seduce the wife of one of Rome’s most prominent citizens, he gets more than he bargained for. The musical is created by Garinei and Giovannini and written in collaboration with Pasquale Festa Campanile, Massimo Franciosa and Luigi Magni with music by Armando Trovajoli.  Rugantino debuted at Teatro Sistina in Rome on December 15, 1962.  It later opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theater, where it played an exclusive three-week engagement in February of 1964.

 

Rugantino was celebrated not only for its storyline, but also for the accuracy of the scenery, the gorgeous costumes by Giulio Coltellacci, the choreography by Gino Landi, and the melodies of the maestro Armando Trovajoli that reign supreme in the picturesque set of the vanished Rome.

The show was revived in 2010 at the Teatro Sistina, where Enrico Brignano took on the title role that had been played by such famous performers as Nino Manfredi and Enrico Montesano.

New York, N.Y., October 15, 2012Jared Grimes, Joshua Henry,  Adriane Lenoxand Amber Riley (“Glee”) will star in New York City Center’s acclaimed production of Cotton Club Parade,returning for seven performances from November 14–18, 2012. Conceived by Jack Viertel and presented under the auspices of City Center’s Tony Award–winning Encores! series, Cotton Club Paradewill once again be directed and choreographed byWarren Carlyle,with music direction byJazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis. The show will feature the Jazz at Lincoln Center All Stars under the direction of Daryl Waters. 

 

Cotton Club Paradeopened at City Center on November 18, 2011 for a limited, six-performance run and received unanimous rave reviews. Cotton Club Parade is a Broadway-style revue celebrating Ellington’s years at the famed Harlem nightclub in the 1920s and ‘30s, when the joint was jumping with shows featuring big band swing and blues. As in the original revues, Cotton Club Parade will feature singers, dancers and variety acts, with songs by the greatest jazz composers of the time, including Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields (“I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” and “Digga Digga Doo”), a young Harold Arlen (“Stormy Weather,” “I’ve Got the World on a String,” “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,”), and of course, Duke Ellington (“Rockin’ in Rhythm,” “Cotton Club Stomp,” “Black and TanFantasy,” and “Creole Love Call”).

 

Duke Ellingtoninfluenced millions of people around the world and at home. During the course of his 50-year career, he composed more than 3,000 songs and played more than 20,000 performances in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. He gave American music its own sound for the first time with popular hits such as “It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got That Swing,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Mood Indigo,” “Solitude,” “In a Mellotone,” and “Satin Doll.” Ellington was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1966 and later earned several other prizes, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and the Legion of Honor by France in 1973.

 

TheJazz at Lincoln Center All Stars, under the direction of Daryl Waters, is composed of 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players, who have performed at Jazzat Lincoln Center and with the country’s top jazz orchestras.

 

Jared Grimes is revolutionizing tap and hip-hop/street jazz. He has danced alongside and for legends such as Gregory Hines, Jerry Lewis, Mariah Carey, and Wynton Marsalis.  Jared’s stage credits include Babes in Arms at the Goodspeed Opera House; Twist directed by Debbie Allen; The Scottsboro Boys (workshop), directed by Susan Stroman; and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes directed by John Rando.   Jared performed at the Kennedy Center on the occasion of Barack Obama's inauguration, and shortly after again for Ted Kennedy's birthday.  He will be featured in the opening program of City Center’s 2012 Fall for Dance Festival.

 

Joshua Henry last appeared at City Center as The Scarecrow in The Wiz. Joshua recently starred as Jake in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess on Broadway. His performance as Haywood Patterson in the musical The Scottsboro Boys earned him a Tony Award nomination for “Best Performance by a leading actor in a musical.” Other Broadway shows include American Idiot and In the Heights.

 

Adriane Lenox’s many Broadway credits include Doubt (Tony Award), Chicago, Caroline or Change, Kiss Me Kate, Ain't Misbehavin', Dreamgirls and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.  Off-Broadway, she was seen in Still Life and Dinah Was... (Obie, Audelco Awards).  Adriane appeared with Sandra Bullock in the film The Blind Side,and she will appear opposite Robert DeNiro inRed Lights and in Lee Daniels'The Butler.

 

Amber Rileycurrently stars as Mercedes Jones on Fox’s hit musical comedy “Glee,” which returns for its fourth season this fall. She has performed in numerous theater productions, including Alicein Wonderland, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Into the Woods and Mystery on the Docks with the Los Angeles Opera.  Amber received two NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on “Glee", as well as two Teen Choice Award nominations for Choice TV: Female Scene Stealer. She previously served as an Ambassador for VH-1’s Save the Music Foundation.

 

Warren Carlyledirected and choreographed the world premiere of Cotton Club Parade as well as the Encores! productions of On the Town, Juno, Stairway to Paradise and Finian’s Rainbow, along with its subsequent Broadway production.He is currently directing and choreographing Chaplin, now playing at the Barrymore Theater. Additionally,Warren directed and choreographed the Broadway productions of A Tale of Two Cities andHugh Jackman, Back on Broadway,and he choreographed the recent Broadway revival of Follies.

NYC, Revised, October 8, 2007 Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon's new dance company, Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, will make its New York debut October 17 21, 2007 at New York City Center, where it has become guest Resident Company. The season will include two American premieres and two New York premieres choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, as well as New York premieres by several of today's cutting-edge international choreographers, including William Forsythe, Liv Lorent, Michael Clarke and Edwaard Liang.

The company will perform to live music each evening, including performances with full orchestra comprised of members of the Orchestra of St. Lukes, led by Rob Fisher. Leading dancers from major U.S. and European ballet companies will be participating in this debut New York season, including Ashley Bouder, Darcey Bussell, Jonathan Cope, Gonzalo Garcia, Nehemiah Kish, Maria Kowroski, Michael Nunn, Oxana Panchenko, William Trevitt, Wendy Whelan, Anastasia Yatsenko and others.

Christopher Wheeldon will hold a FREE to the public, open rehearsal at City Center on Friday, October 19 at 4 pm. Mr. Wheeldon plans to make pre-curtain talks,conducted by choreographers, performing artists and others, a signature event of his new dance company, Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, to help to demystify ballet and help cultivate a new generation of dance audiences. Doors will open at 3:30pm; seating is limited and admission is on a first come first served basis.
