It’s 1923 at a weekend party at Bourne Estate near Maidenhead, England. Teddy (Sean Bell) and Suzanne (Sarah Rolleston) are American guests who became friends on the Mauritania en route to England. Upon arrival, Teddy is immediately smitten by Vivi (Amber Guest) whose reputation as a flirt is legendary and who is engaged to Perry (Brandon Andrus). Marjory (Natalie Beck), Perry’s ward, has her sights set on Geoff (Nathan Freeman) and Count Spinagio (Jason Simon) - the gigolo of the piece - will gladly walk off with any available heiress. Perry seeks to ensure Vivi’s faithfulness by faking his own death on a flight to America piloted by friend Jack (Matt Dumont). Vivi figures all this out and ratchets up her flirting knowing Perry is watching. The other male guests (Marc Bitler, Daniel Drewes, RJ Magee, John Wascavage) help the other lady guests (Andrea Dotto, Michelle Foard, Lauren Frankovich, Britte Steele) avoid Count Spinagio. Joseph (Mark Hawbecker), the butler, tolerates the shenanigans.

In Joanne Sydney Lessner’s new hilarious revenge comedy, a pair of married opera critics are forced to reexamine their priorities when the tenor whose career they ruined moves in with them.
Carrie Greenlea is an opera critic who enjoys skewering singers for everything from bad high notes to bad nose jobs. Her husband and fellow critic, Norman, prefers to equivocate rather than hurt anyone’s feelings. When Stefano Donato, a mediocre Italian tenor whose career they have jointly ruined, moves in with them, he proceeds to exact revenge. Events reach critical mass when their household is further invaded by their Bette Davis-impersonating editor; a marginally talented, but resourceful soprano; and Stefano’s desperate wife. For Critical Mass, playwright Joanne Sydney Lessner drew on her own experience reviewing recordings and performances for Opera News over the past decade.
“Writing Critical Mass was my way of working through what I consider to be a solemn responsibility,” says Lessner. “To find the comedy, I took one of my fears as a critic – finding myself face to face with someone whose performance I didn’t like – and drew it out to the extreme. There are
moments when the play borders on farce, and there’s a fair helping of operatic excess, but it does explore, quite seriously, the nature and purpose of arts criticism. I think critics can lose sight of the fact that they have the power not just to derail a single career, but also to squelch a vulnerable art form. But because I’m still also an active performer, I can appreciate both sides of the equation.”
Featuring Aaron Davis*, Laura Faith, Marc Geller*, Zac Hoogendyk*, Shorey Walker*, and Leigh Williams*.
Mary Willis White and Laura Faith are the producing directors. Set design by Chris Minard, costume design by Ashley Rose Horton, lighting design by Melissa Mizell, and sound design by Hidenori Nakajo. The production stage manager is Taylor Crampton.

"Pallotta delivers a powerful heartfelt story. A must see." ~Empowerment Source, Inc.
In its continued mission to produce quality theatre on both sides of the Hudson River, The Hudson Exploited Theater Company (HExTC) once again crosses the Hudson to The Lion at Theatre Row Studios with the New York première of Jane Ho written by John Pallotta and directed by Arian Blanco.
Jane Ho is a psychologically penetrating play about the world of a prostitute. Sexy, disturbing, and emotionally moving, it explores the inner workings of the "life." What are they really like behind the mystery of their occupation? To find out, spend an evening with four ladies of the night as they "reveal" the things they tell their pillow, nobody should. This original play was selected by HExTC in 2003 where it was developed and then produced at its residency space, the Park Performing Arts Center's 32nd Street Playhouse. The strong audience response along with a generous matching gift grant from the Ford Foundation spurred HExTC to now produce this NYC premiere. "This process of nurturing, developing, and polishing new plays at our residency space in NJ and then bringing them to such a prestigious venue like Theatre Row signals an important step in legitimizing HExTC's profile as a leading producer of new works," states Artistic Director Adrian Rodriguez, "Jane Ho marks an exciting time for HExTC."
