STRIKE ANYWHERE

presents

!!FreEpLaY!!

a MACHINAL mash-up

A Collision between Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble & blessed unrest

One Night Only February 4 at the Brecht Forum, NYC

New York, NY– Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble, presents !!FreEpLay!! a MACHINAL mash-up at the Brecht Forum, 451 West Street, (West Side Hwy between Bank St. & Bethune) New York, NY 10014. Performance on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 8:00PM.  FREE PRE-SHOW SOUNDPAINTING WORKSHOP AT 7:15pm.

MACHINAL mash-up is a collision between Strike Anywhere, an interdisciplinary improvisation ensemble and Blessed Unrest, an ensemble theater that is in the midst of rehearsals for MACHINAL.

Written by Sophie Treadwell in 1928, MACHINAL is a powerful expressionist drama about gender oppression.  Blessed Unrest will perform excerpts from their rehearsal process that will launch Strike Anywhere’s improvisations.  In addition, Strike Anywhere will SOUNDPAINT the material.  Soundpainting is the sign language for structured improvisation developed by Walter Thompson.  The gestures allow a conductor to compose in real time with an interdisciplinary orchestra.

The link between the two companies is Strike Anywhere performer, Damen Scranton, who directs for Blessed Unrest (Burn, Crave, Hold, winner of the 2008 NY Innovative Theatre Award for Outstanding Production).

The Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble features: Donna Bouthillier (dance), Michel Gentile (flute), Rob Henke (trumpet), Damen Scranton* (actor), Rolf Sturm (guitar) and Leese Walker* (actor/artistic director).  Special Blessed Unrest guests include: Zenzelé Cooper, Eunjee Lee*, Nurit Monacelli*, Sophie Nimmannit, Celli Pitt*, Darrell Stokes*, Laura Wickens* and Jason Winfield. (*Appearing courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association)

The Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble is an inter-disciplinary ensemble theater that has been generating original performance pieces since 1997.  The permanent ensemble is comprised of world-class jazz musicians, modern dancers, and actors.  Performers collaborate through an ensemble-based, improvisational process to create politically-charged, original works that address socially-relevant issues.  Its work is guided by the words of Bertolt Brecht, "Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it."  The company is in residence at the Brecht Forum.

Strike Anywhere has been featured on Radio France, NPR, WBAI, German Public Radio and U.S. television. The company has appeared at: B.A.M., American Airlines Theater, Zipper Factory, P.S. 122, St. Clements, Theatre for the New City, Galapagos, and HERE Arts Center. For more information on Strike Anywhere, please visit www.strikeanywhere.info

SCRATCH THAT! - Chalkboard Improv and Poetry

This night combines the talents of the multi-genre improvisation artists Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble and the internationally acclaimed performance versifiers Mayhem Poets, riffing on one of Glenn Beck's favorite props.

Before the show, the audience is invited to scribble objects, actions, individuals and an ideas on a Beck-style chalkboard to inspire the troupes to connect, no matter how far removed or unrelated they may be.

The Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble was founded in 1997 in NYC by Artistic/Producing Director, Leese Walker. Its mission is to promote empathy, free-thinking and greater social awareness through provocative theatre and educational outreach. Its work is guided by the words of Bertolt Brecht, "Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it." Performers collaborate through an ensemble-based, improvisational process to create politically-charged, original works that addresses socially relevant issues. The permanent ensemble is comprised of world-class musicians, dancers, visual artists and actors.

The Mayhem Poets mission originated At Rutgers University in 2000, when Kyle Sutton (aka Black Skeptik) and Scott Tarazevits started an open-mic on campus called Verbal Mayhem. Their idea was to find a way to access people from all walks of life with spoken word. As a result they reached out to prisons, fraternities, churches, and hip hop/poetry fans alike to attract the most diverse poetry open-mic scene in the world. The spirit of Verbal Mayhem convinced the two young performers to craft a show and go on a mission to change peoples lives and reshape society's view of poetry. Always up to date with contemporary world issues, This one of a kind Tour de Force stays fresh no matter what the venue. From theatre festivals to Hip Hop or Rock concerts, Community events to Youth Education series, Mayhem is the future.

Pocket Full of Change  | Open: 06/02/06 Close: 06/17/06
Mixing jazz, clowning, theatre, and modern dance, the Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble probes the political landscape in its latest offering, POCKET FULL OF CHANGE. Appropriating concepts from jazz and popular music, Strike Anywhere's performers act as different "instruments" or "parts of the band". And, as with jazz, the company improvises on the pieces every night making each performance unique. From the ill-effects of apathy and consumerism, to media manipulation and the rush to war, the ensemble raises an unflinching set of questions as it riffs with humor and insight on topics such as civil liberties, capitalism, and healthcare in today's society. Strike Anywhere challenges audiences to examine the issues raised by the performance by providing a forum for community dialogue following each show. A member of the Brecht Forum will facilitate the post-show dialogue.
