NYC launch of #specialcharacters by Larissa Shmailo  | Open: 05/11/14 Close: 05/11/14
This event celebrates Larissa Shmailo's new poetry collection #specialcharacters with readings by
Amy King, Philip Nikolayev, Steve Dalachinsky, Marc Vincenz, and emcees Ron Kolm and Jonathan Penton.
About #specialcharacters
"This is a thrilling book of femininity and magic. When it comes to capturing the intimacy of pain, Larissa Shmailo is among the most daring poets of her generation. When speaking of human rights, she is a human flame. She is subtle and provocative, fresh and out of bounds. You will fall in love here, and you will be loved right back."
Philip Nikolayev-

"I see this work as a continuum in a long tradition of radical writing practices from Futurism, to Dada, to Oulipo, to Pussy Riot. Read it when you wish to be empowered. Read it when you wish to be entertained. Read it to rid yourself of the precious and polite."
Elaine Equi -

"This is a major work by a major poet."
Steve Dalachinsky

The Manhattan Monologue Slam  | Open: 05/05/12 Close: 05/12/12
Are you the best actor or actress in New York City?  Prove it!  That is the calling card for my show The Manhattan Monologue Slam.  My name is Philip Galinsky and along with my Robert and super theatre producer Terry Schnuck, we created the "Best Actor Showcase Event" voted by Backstage readers choice awards.  The show focuses on a totally live interactive event where actors showcase their skills in front of a packed theatre crowd and industry professionals.  We are the only theatre show on the planet where the audience votes for the best performer online using their smart phone.

What inspired us to create this event? Well, we noticed that to be a struggling actor in New York means you have to pay your dues by going on countless auditions. For talent agents, it's difficult to find that diamond-in-the-rough actor who may be "the one" for the role. For New Yorker audiences, there are so many plays, poetry readings and stand-up comedy shows that it's tough to decide what to see.  So we created an entertaining solution, with our monthly Manhattan Monologue Slam.

The first Saturday of each month the crowd buzzes with energy. It's an eclectic mix of friends and family (including children), industry people, downtown enthusiasts, and, of course, a slew of fellow actors some with recognizable faces. They spill over the seats into the aisle and line up along the bar, crowding to get a glimpse, like lab scientists anticipating a groundbreaking event.

Some of New York's best one-person shows are never seen.  Every day, hundreds of hard-working actors are rigorously rehearsing monologues, isolated in their apartments. Now the time has come for these actors to bring their work to the stage, face an eager audience, and maybe even advance their careers. This is the American Idol of monologue performance.

The Monologue Slam is not about cutthroat competition and egos but about accessible, uplifting, supportive theater.  As for the performances, there are some electrifying ones. And, of course, a competition wouldn't be complete without a few flops. But even the flops are successes because the audience generously celebrates risk taking, starting with just getting up onstage. In the performer-friendly climate a performer's dedication and effort often trump virtuosity.

Are you the best actor or actress in New York City?  Prove it!

Aspen or Bust! Red Bastard vs. Deenie Nast  | Open: 09/20/05 Close: 10/11/05
Aspen or Bust! Red Bastard vs. Deenie Nast

Heavy weights Red Bastard and Deenie Nast don their comedy gloves and go 2 rounds in their title shot for the upcoming Aspen Fest (HBO's U.S. Comedy Arts Festival). In their corner, they bring a quick combination of sparring partners, including: Corn Mo, Chris Rozzi, Zero Boy, and more..

Let's Get Ready to Rummmmmble!
In red, NY's cult favorite clown freak, Red Bastard bobs and weaves across the stage with an ego so enormous it can only be matched by his colossal red ass. In this 30 minute "Best of" show, his well placed jabs take the piss out of elitism, theatre, politics, the audience and even himself.

In sequins, Oscar-winner, 2-time Tony winner and international super-drunk, Deenie Nast, delivers her no holds barred, song-filled tribute to herself. After a 12-year legal bout, Nast is back with a vengeance, having earned the rights to perform "below 39 th Street". Songs, film clips, gossip and general "Nast"-iness will splatter the ring.
