We know about Beauty and the Beast, but do you know about the Trolls, Hags and Winds?

To save her father and mother, a young daughter makes a promise to live with a beastly bear, whose palace is secretly filled with nasty, bumbling trolls.

In the dark of night, our heroine falls in love with a sweet shy Prince. She makes a promise never to see his face in the light and to keep their love in the dark. But when the sneaky trolls convince her to sneak a peak, she breaks her promise and the trolls whisk away the newly un-enchanted Prince.

So- what’s a girl to do? Save him, of course! On her amazing journey to save her true love, she encounters Hags and Horses and gets help from the Winds. Will she save her hero from the evil trolls? Can she mend her broken promise? Will they live happily ever after? Join us and find out!

The untold story of God's most trusted messenger

We’ve all heard the story: the Angel Gabriel announces the coming of a child and Mary of Nazareth is stunned but welcoming to her Lord’s will. Then, the players in this ancient tale must somehow live through nine long months of waiting...

This is the untold story - the story of the Angel Gabriel and Mary of Nazareth’s strange and otherworldly love affair; the play explores the humanity of Gabriel, the divinity of young Mary, and the blindness of the community around them.

What effect did these two beings of light have on one another? After Mary is visited by Gabriel, they are forced to part. She is shunned by her family and the people of Jerusalem who refuse to believe her predicament. Gabriel takes it upon himself to convince Mary’s future husband Joseph that his fiancée holds a pivotal place in human history. And, Mary herself must find the strength to leave the frightened young girl behind, and become a powerful prophetess who has the courage to take control of her own destiny, and the destiny of her unborn child.

“We are on the cusp of Aries, and moving into Pisces. The world is turning on its hinge, shifting from one age to another!” Set amidst the crumbling ruins of an old world moving towards the new, this production also reflects the in-between state of those who inhabit this earth. Just as the world is turning and shifting, so is Gabriel himself, stuck in-between two worlds: not quite an angel, but also not a man. This is the moment, every 2,000 years, when the Angel Gabriel appears, just as he did to Hagar and the parents of Samson before Mary of Nazareth. But, as “there is red paint dripping from the sky like blood,” we cannot be sure if this new world – and this change in Gabriel – is something to be welcomed… or feared.

Steve Buechler’s costume design incorporates both contemporary and period elements, while Elle Kunnos de Voss’ scenic design is comprised of crumbling stones of the ruins of a city, the falling of this world.  Lucas Segall adds a haunting musical underscore, and Libby Jensen’s stunning light design creates chilling shadows as well as angelic illumination.

The production features Julie Ek as Mary, Dan Lovley as Joseph, Joey Lozada as Gabriel, with Margie Ferris (Ann/Elisheva), Rebecca Nerz (Shepherd) and Zachary Zimbler (Joachim/Priest).

Calamity Jane and her Mother are on their way to California when they find themselves in the beleaguered town of Hoopersville. Here, all but three of the townsfolk have been townie-napped by the hilarious, hair-raising Hoopsnakes who have plagued their town. Will Calamity Jane be able to help the remaining townspeople come out of their hidey-holes and face the Hoopsnake Queen once and for all? And most importantly, will there be pie?

Join us in the Wild Wild West for some wild wild fun! You might have heard of Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, and Pecos Bill - BUT what about Jane?! And how did a little girl named Jane become CALAMITY Jane? Presented in the style of your favorite Saturday mornin’ cartoons, it’s gonna be a rootin’ tootin’, rip roarin’, good ol’ time!

Featuring Katie Proulx as Calamity Jane, this tall-tale production features an ensemble cast including Abraham Adams (Mayor), Gianna Cioffi (Snakelet), Jessica Kelly (Mom), David Mangiamele (Townie Tam), Monica O’Malley (Snake Queen) and Sarah Pullman (Townie Toula). Creative team includes: Emily Antenucci (Assistant Director/Stage Manager), Kristin Dwyer (Assistant Director/Stage Manager), Nicole Carroll (Scenic Design & Props), Daisy Long (Light Design) and Kristina Sneshkoff (Costume Design).

Running time is approximately 50 minutes without intermission; show is appropriate for ages 4-12.

E. J. C. Calvert is from St. Louis, Missouri, currently living in Chicago. Achievements include: Samuel French OOB 2010 Winner, O'Neill Conference semifinalist, Leota Diesel Ashton Prize in Playwriting recipient, International Women's Playwriting Festival finalist, Chatterton Short Play Festival Audience Award winner. Her play The Bear (A Tragedy) is published by Samuel French. Performances and readings include The Bird Girl (Last Frontier Theatre Conference Play Lab), Testify! (Roy Arias Studios), Cadaver Synod (The Brecht Forum), Witness! The Amazing Slipping Away (The Cell). She holds an MFA in Playwriting from the New School for Drama and is a member of the Dramatists Guild.

Jacquelyn Honeybourneis a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis with a B.A, in Theatre and Biology. A director of reimagined classics and new works in New York, many at Looking Glass where she is an Artistic Associate, some of her most recent directing credits include - Black Peter: A Musical,Naturalized Woman(staged reading), A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Casina (Adaptor/Director, Looking Glass Forum), Phaedra (Adaptor/Director, Looking Glass Forum), Paradise: A one woman show(UK), The War Zone is My Bed: A one-woman show (UK), and Li’lHeroes(Looking Glass Forum). Jacquelyn also works as a scenic and makeup designer as well as a puppet builder for theatres in the city.  She is an Artistic Associate with Nora’s Playhouse, where will be directing Yasmine Rana’s Returning.

Alan Watson, NYC playwright turned Hollywood golden boy, returns to Looking Glass Theatre to present a reading of his first new play in eight years.

But this isn’t the play anyone expected.

This is a new script. About them.

Just a Reading is a play about the reading of a play - a play Alan has written to confess his love to his old friend and creative partner May and expose her boyfriend's affair. The guilty lovers seek escape...but the door is locked. And only Alan has the key. Will they read the parts he's written? Will he get the happy ending he's waited so long to hear?

The production features an ensemble cast including Jenn Boehm, Michael Sean Cirelli, Brandon Ferraro, Cas Marino, Alexandra Mingione and Stephen Reich.

Ladies and gents, girls and boys, scalawags and scurvy dogs!  ‘Tis time fer Three By the Sea!

Join Buccaneer Bocephus Q. Fizziwater as he dives into a trio of tales about wondrous watery worlds telling the stories of “Paddy and the Mermaid,” “Coyote’s Moon” and “Foghorn Franny.” Mermaids, grizzled ole sea dogs, surfer dudes, and ornery coyotes conquer the Seven Seas! Will Paddy be able to keep his Mermaid bride happy on the shore? Will Little Rabbit be able to keep Coyote in the river and avoid being supper? Will Foghorn Franny survive surfer culture to find her Pop? Each sea yarn – inspired by traditional Irish folktales, Native American and Mexican folklore as well as American tall tales - is performed in whimsical, story-theatre style with music, puppets and much more!

“Paddy and the Mermaid” is loosely based on T. Crofton Croker’s “The Lady of Gollerus” published in his 1825 collection The Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland. “Coyote’s Moon” features recurring coyote and rabbit characters of traditional Native American and Mexican trickster folklore. “Foghorn Franny” boasts a superhuman ability - a huge voice - in the American tall tale tradition.

V-day Nyc 2011 The Vagina Monologues  | Open: 02/18/11 Close: 02/19/11
V-Day New York City 2011and Looking Glass Theatre’s artistic community are proud to again join the global effort to raise funds and awareness for local organizations that work to stop violence against women and girls by presenting a benefit production of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues.

Last year more than 5,400 V-Day benefits were held around the world raising over $4 million and increasing awareness towards ending violence against women. Proceeds from V-Day NYC 2011 ticket sales will benefit Women In Need, Inc. (WIN), which provides housing, help and hope to New York City women and their families who are homeless and disadvantaged.  In addition to benefiting this local group, ten percent of proceeds will go to this year’s V-Day international spotlight theme, THE WOMEN AND GIRLS OF HAITI.

Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous," The Vagina Monologues, which was first performed off-Broadway by Ms. Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences.  Ms. Ensler has performed the play to great acclaim throughout the world - from Zagreb to Santa Barbara, from London to Seattle, from Jerusalem to Oklahoma City.  Villard Books/Random House first published The Vagina Monologues, which includes a foreword by Gloria Steinem, in February 1998.  A special edition was released in hard cover and paperback in February 2008 in honor of V-Day’s ten year anniversary.

A diverse cast of performers from the Looking Glass community – past, present, future, staff, interns, directors and more - will perform the monologues, as directed by veteran director Rose Ginsberg with Looking Glass Theatre’s Founding Artistic Director Justine Lambert.

Trojan Women Redux  | Open: 01/28/11 Close: 02/06/11
In the modern port city of New York, ten immigrant women are held hostage against their will. A grandmother, once royalty, clings to hope as her remaining children are dragged away. In a radical interpretation of Euripides’ classic play, adapter/director Casey Cleverly modernizes the text to focus on the all-too-contemporary issue of human trafficking. Mixing live drama, news clips, projections, dance, and an original music score, Trojan Women Redux turns the ancient play into a modern day tragedy exploring the real stories of women across the globe.

Betsy is Bored, Bored, Bored, Bored, BORED!  | Open: 10/16/10 Close: 11/21/10
Looking Glass Theatre, celebrating almost 20 years of productions strengthening the voice of women in theater and the arts, proudly presents Betsy Is Bored, Bored, Bored, Bored, BORED!, a new play for children exploring the power of imagination written by Judy Sheehan, one of the original cast members and creators of the longest-running Off-Broadway show Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding. Looking Glass resident director Amanda Thompson directs the production, which opens Saturday, October 16 and runs through Sunday, November 21 with performances Saturdays at 12pm and 2pm, Sundays at 2pm and 4pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for children 12 and under. TDF vouchers are accepted. Running time is approximately 50 minutes without intermission; show is appropriate for ages 3-10.

As the play begins, audiences of all ages meet poor Betsy, who is stuck at home on a rainy Saturday, when her parents say the single most annoying thing any parent can say: use your imagination. Hah! Betsy imagines herself as a star balloon baseball player, a famous Egyptologist, and a scientist/inventor with a talking cat for a best friend. It’s all fun and games until her imagination comes to life and moves in with the family. Imagination is way more powerful than Betsy ever suspected. Parents: be warned. After seeing this show, your kids might unleash the power of imagination.  Yikes!

Playwright Judy Sheehan, the tenth of 12 children, has written many works, including two plays for kids:  I Hate Spinach and Betsy Blue or I Was A 9-Year Old Blues Diva, both produced at Looking Glass Theatre. She’s written numerous other plays, including Alice In Ireland and What To Do About Nothing.  Sheehan is also the author of two novels: ...And Baby Makes Two and Women In Hats, both published by Ballantine.

Director Amanda Thompson is a New York City based director and acting teacher. At Looking Glass Theatre, she has instructed two sessions of acting interns and directed numerous productions in the Writer/Director Forum including Badger and Maddy, Potato Girl, and Ampersand: a Romeo & Juliet Story Acts One and Two (winning Best Direction and Best Production among other Forum awards). Her other NYC credits include Hatching (Fringe Festival), Dismemberment (Player’s Theatre), Dismissing Robert Fink and Litmus (Manhattan Rep Theatre), and Baldy (Abingdon Theatre). Thompson has also assisted for directors Lear Desbessonet and Rachel Dickstein, and playwright (and Obie-winning actor) Heidi Schreck.

This new production features an ensemble of Looking Glass rookie and veteran performers, including Toccara Castleman, Suzee Dunn, Ryan McCurdy, Jacquelyn Schultz and Mary Beth Walsh. The Poppet Show: Childish Plays For Grown-ass People  | Open: 09/30/10 Close: 10/09/10
Short attention-span plays for people who would go see theatre every night... if it weren't so damn boring.*

When was the last time you went to a play and actual felt like you were playing?  The Poppet Show is the most fun you’ll have at the theatre this fall.  In At the Public Burning Place, a couple undertakes a ritual burning of each other’s most cherished possessions in order to settle an argument.  Do you and your brother still fight like kids?  When you finally find out what the adult siblings in I Got Your Nose are arguing over, you won’t believe your eyes.  Filled with laughs and just creepy enough to get you pumped for Halloween, The Poppet Show adds a refreshing smack of immaturity to a nice, sophisticated night at the theatre.

The Tempest  | Open: 09/16/10 Close: 09/19/10
The C.A.G.E. Theatre, in conjunction with The Looking Glass Space Grant Program presents The Tempest. The final of work and possible retirement of William Shakespeare is co-directed by Monica Alia and Michael Hagins. The Tempest, set to the concept of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, is the story of Prospero (Michael Hagins), the true Duke of Milan, who was exiled with his daughter Miranda (Rebecca Overholt) to a remote island, and has lived there for 12 years with the spirit Ariel (Molly Gilman) and the half sea monster Caliban (Daniel Largo). Attempting to put the past wrongs to rest and help Miranda to a future, Prospero raises a storm to shipwreck the King of Naples (Thomas Cox) and his party which includes Prospero's evil brother and the usurping Duke of Milan Antonio (Danny Sauls). Interested more in new beginnings than a vengeful end, Prospero relishes an impending marriage for Miranda, keeping his old enemies alive and setting free his loyal servant Ariel. There are some mature themes in the play, but nothing demeaning or controversial, which makes the show safe and family-friendly. The show runs approximately 2 hours including a 10 minute intermission.

Ravel  | Open: 08/05/10 Close: 08/15/10
For thousands of years, the three Fates have spun and measured human lives. But when a thread breaks, and a woman dies, they must leave their posts to set things right. Meanwhile, the woman’s mother and daughter struggle to understand her mysterious death, her research on frog extinction and each other.

Spring Awakening: A Sin Of Omission  | Open: 07/07/10 Close: 07/17/10
A new adaptation of an expressionist masterpiece comes to Looking Glass Theatre. Spring Awakening: A Sin of Omission - adapted by Toby Bercovici and Emily Denison, directed by Toby Bercovici - highlights the youthful, energized, shockingly modern aspects of Frank Wedekind’s original 1891 script, with a lean, poetic version of the text.

Wedekind’s play was years ahead of its time—so far ahead that it wasn’t produced till 15 years after its composition, and has been frequently banned ever since. The play condemned the era’s repressed and repressive culture of 19th-century Germany by showing its toxic effect on the lives of several 14-year-olds: Wendla, whose mother can’t bring herself to tell her daughter the facts of sex, with tragic results; Martha, abused by her strait-laced, hypocritical father; brilliant Melchior, whose rebellious nature infuriates his pompous schoolmasters; Moritz, whose poor test scores make him want to kill himself; and Hansy and Ernst, two boys who find safety and comfort in each other.

Bercovici says the issues raised in the play, which scandalized theatergoers 100 years ago, still resonate today: adolescent sexuality (gay and straight), rape, abortion, suicide, child abuse. “Puberty is still a violent, depressing, strange period. It still doesn’t ‘work.’ Suicides, anti-depressants, bullying, sex when kids have no idea what it is—all that still exists, probably more now than it did then.”

This adaptation, first produced at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, is performed by nine extraordinary young actors playing 24 roles. It features dances by choreographer Madelyne Camera, in which a painting comes to life, joyful children turn into tyrannically inept professors, and a ghost dances a gruesome, melancholy duet with his severed head.

God has had it. She gave us a beautiful planet with beautiful animals, beautiful land, beautiful oceans, beautiful air, and beautiful minds with which to make it even more beautiful. A light-hearted look at the environment and the challenge of reducing our carbon footprint, this family-friendly production is a mix of poetry and action. By day, playwright Terri McKinstry is a professional facilities manager aggressively pursuing her LEED Green Associate accreditation. In the United States, buildings are responsible for over 38% of carbon dioxide emissions, 24% to 50% of energy use, and 72% of electricity consumption. She is learning how to minimize the impact of her office buildings on the environment.

Originally from an Ohio farm-town, director Chanda Calentine is also the Assistant Managing Director of Planet Connections Theatre Festivity, New York's premiere eco-friendly theater festival. She pursues environmental awareness at PS 116 teaching Solar Energy Awareness and Oceanography, the NY Aquarium as a volunteer docent, and at her Brooklyn home where she is an active gardener and composter.

Scorned in one life - a woman seeks revenge in the next!

Abducted and shamed, a beautiful princess demands that her captor Bisma make things right. He shoots an arrow, hoping to scare her away, but the arrow strikes and kills her. As she dies, she vows to return in her next life and avenge this wrong. Srikandi is born a woman but trains as a warrior. Armed with a bow and arrow, she goes to war. But, in battle Bisma has been undefeated!  Only Srikandi holds the arrow that will bring him down.

Taken from the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, the production uses Balinese wayang kulit, or shadow puppetry, combined with music, dance, and video. Ornate two-dimensional puppets bring to life a story of love and war that points to a mythical past while connecting to a digital future. Wayang kulit is the ideal medium for this story as shadow puppets are at once solid and ethereal; present and connected to the past. They are the uncanny simulacrum of our daily experience, a tale of reinventing the self, a story of transformation and courage.

Julia helps Johnny build Isabel, secretly trying to win him over and prove to him that only a real woman can in fact be perfect.

Putu loves to play with the puppets and make up stories, but in Bali girls can't be puppeteers, or can they? When Putu and Nyoman get lost in the jungle, they encounter fantastical creatures who share stories through dance, comedy and masked drama. But their only way out of the jungle is to create a puppet show for a witch (layak)! Reluctant to work together, can they set aside their animosity to perform a puppet show magical enough to impress the witch and get home? Is all that seems scary and evil also good?

A WOMAN, A WOOD, AN OPPORTUNITY...
A hapless man finds himself in the middle of the woods and is forced with a choice. How does he find his voice in a world where it's all been done before? How do you? The Inferno Project.

The beginnings of the story are familiar: a man disillusioned with his life enters a wood in search of something. What follows however, is all new, equal parts horror, humor and hope. Through the course of the play we follow Dante and Virgil out of the wood and through history as Dante struggles to find his voice and the story of his life in order to save it.

Following the concept of the play is its construction; Reinhard interweaves text from historical speeches and quotes from such notables as Malcolm X, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Margaret Thatcher, Sojourner Truth, and Martin Luther King, Jr. into her original script. The result is an accurate and heartbreaking look at America's past struggles and an equally hopeful look at its future.

Baal lives in a world of pleasures without regret. Society and religion dictate that this is the wrong way to live. Baal lives outside the box and rejects its safety. Is it Baal's rejection of the "rules" of society that causes his downward spiral or is it the "rules" themselves?

In this production of Brecht's first play, a woman is cast in the title role. Is "he/she" another one of life's many boxes? Gender and sexuality in our society are still hot-button issues as people try to fit life into definitive boxes. "Are you gay or straight?" "How can one physically be female and feel male?" Why do we need these definitions so badly when it makes more sense to accept that a whole range of possibilities exists? We are STILL very gender specific. It must fit "in the box."

This production of BAAL is in a different type of box. With music composed by Alan S. Hewitt, the theater itself is a dark, Weimar cabaret where the old German and new American freaks and artists converge to tell the story of a character who is a hero to some and a demon to others.

This high-intensity tale of love, marriage and eroticism will play in the United States April 5-23.
Winner of all awards at the 1998 Edinburg Fringe Festival, Skin Tight premiered in 1994 at the Bats Theatre, where it played to packed houses. This work from New Zealand, inspired by Denis Glover's poem " The Magpies," tells the intimate story of a rural marriage, where Tom and Elizabeth engage in a violent and erotic dance of the union through an exhilarating feast of fighting, lovemaking and tenderness. The characters strip themselves, literally, to explore the ecstasy and pain of a passionate love affair.

Depicting the onset of puberty as violent and chaotic, Spring's Awakening is no after-school special. Reptilian impulses erupt in children terrorized by adults sunk deep in neurotic denial. One boy has suicidal tendencies as he struggles with his shock over discovering the facts of sex and the possibility of flunking. Another expresses his awakening libido in cool sadism. Masochism appears in a young girl whose mother insists that a stork delivers babies.

The staging of this production contrasts two worlds, an adolescent world depicted by the live actors and a disembodied adult world looming above on screen.

Written at the turn of the twentieth century, Frank Wedekind's play unfolds in an absurdist atmosphere that foreshadowed Brecht and Beckett. This story of the uncomfortable nature of sexuality blooming during the teen years remains relevant still today. The play renders the devastating neglect adolescents experience when family bonds erode while puritanical elements in society grow stronger.

He visits an old friend to inquire about his baby -- to find that the baby is a mystery –- has the baby even really existed? Where redemption in Shakespeare's romance is a reality, in its contemporary counterpart, redemption may be just a fantasy.

Unauthorized Magic in Oz is a toy theater piece based on the modern Oz novels of creator Edward Einhorn and the illustrations of celebrated artist Eric Shanower. Evolution is a comic fable tracking two characters as they evolve from amoeba to human. Both use a varied and visually astonishing vocabulary of puppetry, including bunraku, hand puppetry, rod puppetry, shadow puppetry, and classic toy theater techniques.

Unauthorized Magic in Oz originated in the Toy Theater Festival at St. Ann's Warehouse, and it tells the story of a boy living in Munchkin Country, whose mother and friend are both sorcerers, although they know it is against the law. But when Glinda the Good discovers their activities, they have a lot of explaining to do. It is set inside miniature houses, which both serve as little theaters and are also puppets themselves. It features the work of Eric Shanower, winner of two Eisner Awards for his graphic novel Age of Bronze, the music of William Niederkorn (Fairy Tales of the Absurd), and the puppets/sets of Berit Johnson and Barry Weil. It is performed by Edward Einhorn, Talaura Harms, Tanya Khordoc and Maxwell Zener.

Not Enough Princesses is a new play for children based on classic, yet not well-known, Swedish fairytales. Assorted characters are searching the forest separately for a princess, little knowing that there is only one princess at the end of their quest. On their way they meet a variety of trolls and fantastic creatures. The style and mood is inspired by the work of Swedish illustrator John Bauer whose work is romantic, dark, dramatic, and whimsical.

When Iseabail pleads to Angelo – the newly appointed proxy for the Duchess – for Claudia's life, Angelo will pardon Claudia – only if Iseabail sleeps with him! Will the straight priest agree to the bargain to save his sister's life?

The Girlhood of Shakespear's Heroines consists of five monologues uniting to create one interconnected piece, much as Shakespeare's five acts create one play. In these five monologues, Don Nigro allows five young women, characters from Shakespeare's plays or significantly influenced by those same characters, to discuss as never before their views on love, life, sex and theatre.

Each eloquent speech illuminates the others while remaining distinctly its own. The ideas flow forth with a sense of urgency, eliminating preconceptions and pleading to be heard; as Don Nigro says, "The greatest act of love is to pay attention."
