Families are a home we can never leave. They are the foundation from which our lives are built. Divide this base in half, and the cracks of our youth begin to show. These cracks can propel you forward, but they also hold you back. Broken Homes is an event that relives the memories of two separate lives spent in isolation. But in this evening of solo work, “Welcome to America” and “Two Grey Hairs,” these women find themselves reaching out to connect through narrative. As they return to the broken ties of their past, we enter two different walks of life and discover these women are more alike than different.
Welcome to America:
Christina Riggs was the fifth woman to be executed in the United States, yet she was the first woman to ask for the death penalty. We meet the young nurse in confinement on the eve of her execution to hear her final testimony and the only interview recorded to date. It is through this powerful narrative that we see a woman who has spent a lifetime struggling to survive and discover the harsh reality behind her decision to leave her family and this world behind.
Two Grey Hairs:
We've all been there. You’ve just fallen of a bike and can do one of three things: walk off, just lay there, or get back on. But what happens if you can’t decide? What if being hurt and rejected and the possibility of this happening over and over again keeps you stuck in the middle, stuck in grey area? This is where we meet Emmy, a young woman who is caught in between passionately choosing everything or falling into nothing. Through glimpses of answering machines, prom, auditions, holidays, and sushi, we follow Emmy’s journey on a trail of letters written in an attempt to connect and discover the affect of indecision on the great gains and great losses of life.
