Borders aren't just political - they're personal. How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Gardaí is a new play that sheds light on one woman’s attempt to interrogate the bureaucratic horror that is Immigration Policy. This exciting show examines the desire to find something human and worthwhile in a deeply dehumanizing process.
This show is a hilarious, poignant, and truthful retelling of a deeply personal, grueling, and upsetting merry-go-round of miscommunication and administrative paperwork. It deals with the pressure on relationships, the questioning of one’s identity and the struggle between wanting to stand up for yourself and not wanting to potentially upset your immigrant status.
In this play, Lili explores immigration from Ireland to her native New Mexico and why it’s an issue everyone is so damned worried about.
About the Company: Sunglasses After Dark Productions
SUNGLASSES AFTER DARK: A MANIFESTO
Sunglasses After Dark Productions is a theatre collective dedicated to challenging audiences by deconstructing stereotypes. As a family of artists collaborating together, SADP fosters a supportive environment of unique perspectives. SADP creates and develops new plays, as well as revitalizes classic works with groundbreaking approaches to gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality etc.
Too often we are bombarded by negative and limiting social messages; SADP serves as a proponent of positive social change. Theater should open doors of communication, reach out to communities, fight against intolerance and act as a backlash against hate. We do not create new plays solely for the purpose of creating new work: we empower the weird, turn the unseen into the seen, give the unheard a voice. As the Great T. Geisel once wrote, "A person's a person no matter how small."
