MR. BENGT'S WIFE

Genre: Classical

The beautiful orphan Margit is taken in by a convent in the mistaken belief that she has been left an enormous sum. The play opens with her being whipped by the abbess who's learned the truth: her parents' debts wiped out the family fortune. The whipping only stops when the confessor enters -- and promptly falls in love with the lovely novice -- as has the local nobleman, with whom she's been exchanging sexually explicit letters! Strindberg's answer to Ibsen's "Doll House" and another English-language premiere from triple Audelco Award-nominated August Strindberg Repertory Theatre in an Equity Showcase with Kersti Bryan, Eric Percival, Shawn Fagan, Matt Hurley, Vicki Blankenship and Samm Todd, directed by Craig Baldwin, associate artistic director of the Red Bull Theater, and translated by Prof. Larry Carr and Malin Tybahl.
