American Lyric Theater’s popular series of public libretto readings, The Living Libretto, continues this season at the new National Opera Center. These events are the culminating readings of extensive libretto workshops conducted for the new operas currently being written by ALT resident artists, featuring guest actors from Broadway and off-Broadway. Each reading includes a reception with the featured artists, and is followed by a discussion with the artists moderated by American Lyric Theater's Producing Artistic Director, Lawrence Edelson.THE LONG WALK - Libretto by Stephanie Fleischmann; Music by Jeremy Howard BeckBased on the Book THE LONG WALK: A STORY OF WAR AND THE LIFE THAT FOLLOWS by Brian CastnerTHE LONG WALK is based on Brian Castner’s critically acclaimed book of the same name, which describes a soldier’s return from Iraq where he served as an officer in an Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit and his battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as he tries to reintegrate himself back into his family life upon his return from the war. Journalist Christopher Hayes writes, “We have a society that on the one hand has become comfortable with war and on the other hand wants to distance itself from it as much as possible, to outsource it to contractors, to robots and to the 2.3 million volunteer men and women who have been asked to serve for longer durations than at any time in recent history.” With the exception of September 11 and the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, none of the major military conflicts of the last hundred years have taken place on American soil. These days, war is “out there,” long ago and far away, performed by and inflicted on other people. We are unprecedentedly insulated from it, and the ever-increasing hardship and losses are borne by fewer and fewer volunteers and their families. THE LONG WALK brings it all beautifully and terrifyingly close to home. The $20 ticket includes a wine and cheese reception with the artists and Brian Castner, which begins at 7:00 PM. The reading will begin at 7:30 PM.Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold on the day of the event. The National Opera Center is located at 330 7th Avenue, 7th Floor (between 28th and 29th).
