Enter a queer imagination and embark on  an exploration of exploitation....

An original performance piece made up of poetry, prose, narrative, music, choreography, and movement with an immersive set design. This is a story about a boy on a queer journey toward self-fulfillment. The journey is shaped by the boy's first influence from a feminine force, a femme fatale: his mother. Upon identifying with a queer identity, the struggle becomes appropriating the haunting presence of his eccentric mother within the realm of exploring what queer means to each individual: both sexually and emotionally. How do we ever know when we have reached solid ground? How do we ever know when we have taken root into something concrete?

G.J. Dowding is a writer, director, and performer living in Brooklyn, New York. He attended both Wagner College and New York University, studying everything from vocal performance, music theory, acting, journalism, and fiction/poetry writing. Predominantly trained in acting, he is currently interested in exploring  physical theater and performance art through collaboration of different artistic mediums.

As a gay male, he has been exploring queer identity, persona, and art over the past year while writing a lot about queer theory and his personal upbringing in a queer lifestyle. This piece is essentially a queer solo performance piece with a supporting ensemble. It is autobiographical, filled in with splendid fiction of course! Being that he loves bringing various art forms together within one context, G.J. decided to present my writing in collaboration with music and movement. This is where the ensemble came in; to aid in the telling of a personal queer story, to bring the psyche and subconscious to life. This project is not only based on G.J.'s career goals as an artist but is also meant to serve as a therapeutic conversation with people. His desire to hear as many people’s stories in the world as possible in his lifetime and this is G.J.'s contribution to the conversation.

Quizzically Quimsical  is  his first original multi-media performance piece based on his poetry and prose. G.J. has participated in musical theater and plays in the past as an actor, been involved in conservatory groups, taken workshops and classes in various acting mediums, been a part of the New Generation Theater Ensemble (NGTE), and most recently participated in an advanced movement class at the Maggie Flanigan Studio.

Jillene Johnson Choreographer

Jillene Johnson is a choreographer and performer here in New York City. Miss Johnson received her BA in Dance Studies from The New School University and her artistic certificate from The American Music and Dramatic Academy in Hollywood.  Miss Johnson’s recent pieces include FamilyFoto (2010: Alvin Ailey), BeStillandKNow (2011: Alvin Ailey) Till Love Do Us Part (2011: Frigid Festival), and Flock (2012: New School).  Jillene is interested in how Post Modern Dance and Cabaret Performance could interact with one another. She considers making the serious funny and the mundane stunning. She values beauty; the world needs more of it through art. Art is a means of transmitting light and love for glimpses of clarity and truth. Miss Johnson is constantly living between reality and fantasy. She creates to challenge, entertain, inspire, and explore the interaction of live harmonized vocals, silence, and movement in intimate settings. The entry point of this work is the idea of contorting the body with both naturalistic and grotesque shapes while layering them with poetic vocals and speech to construct a dynamic audio and visual piece. As a Broadway show creates it’s environment with sets and lights, the movement, persisting rhythm of the writing and vocals in this piece transport the audience from a simple stage to the possibility of being immersed in an alternate reality.
