New York City. A place where most of us grow up. A place that defines our lives and its most pivotal moments. DeFLYance uses circus to portray these formative experiences with dexterity and humor. Three people squeeze onto a tiny airborne triangle (representing their first New York City apartment), geriatric walkers are used for more than assisting the elderly, and both the tragic and triumphant sides of a romantic break-up are felt 20 feet in the air in a top story apartment surrounded by people. Special guests include Kristin Young and Sara Joel, both formerly of Cirque du Soleil. Sara will be performing at 8 months pregnant! The show also features award-winning juggler and NYU Tisch Professor, Hovey Burgess, who wrote the book Circus Techniques.
About the Company: Suspended Cirque
Suspended Cirque has created a new genre of aerial performance, integrating breathtaking aerial acrobatics, Their site-specific performance is inspired by the dramatic and unique qualities of the Galapagos Art Space — the audience sits on several large steel islands, surrounded by water on almost all sides. The performance takes place above, around, below, among the audience — no part of the performance space is left unexplored, and the audience is an integral part of the entertainment. Now, Suspended Cirque moves into Manhattan into a new exciting space where all parts of the theatre will be used. Think Cirque du Soleil , but with a more intimate, personal audience experience. Audience members will feel as much a part of the show as the performers!
