GAMELAN DHARMA SWARA WITH SHAHZAD ISMAILY: BALINESE DANCE AND SONG

This performance includes Legong Keraton Lasem, one of the most iconic classical female dances in Bali, and Telek, a classical dance that portrays the battle between good and evil. We will also present the world premiere of Joel Mellin’s Synesthesia, and Kebyar Susun, an instrumental masterwork in the restless and whimsical style that developed in the early 20th century.Shahzad Ismaily will open the show. He gently suggests you read “Two Serious Ladies” by Jane Bowles, and “The Obscene Bird of Night” by Jose Donoso. It’s these two novels that, he feels, most accurately display the touching, bemusing sense of living as the other in the world at large. He has worked with Tanaka, Min san, is currently deeply moved by Berna (gleetchplug) and Aalto (madrona labs), and hopes to learn to love nature more fully.
