A Doll's House is by Henrik Ibsen, A Doll's Life features a book & lyrics by Comden & Green and score by Larry Grossman

The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective is proud to announce their January, 2012 theatrical event. Running in repertory, audiences are invited to join us to explore Nora Helmer, the complex and brazen young woman who slammed a door in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and chang...ed the world in 1879. In NORA, in rep, Beautiful Soup presents a classic look at Ibsen’s play and a new look at the famed Broadway 1982 flop, A Doll’s Life, which is a sequel of sorts.

B.S.T.C is a not-for-profit off-off-Broadway and non-Equity theater company specializing in new looks at classic works. Proceeds from the box offices of our productions are donated to a charity whose mission matches the themes of the play or musical being presented.

A portion of all ticket sales for NORA, IN REP will be donated to The Phyllis Newman Women's Healthcare Initiative: http://www.phyllisnewman.com/healtcare-initiative.html

In A DOLL’S HOUSE by Henrik Ibsen and directed by Cristina Carrion, Nora Helmer has a delicious secret that saved her husband's life, but if he finds out what she's done, it might destroy their marriage. Blackmail and innocence, love and hypocrisy collide in one of the most celebrated plays in theater history. A Doll’s House was the first successful play of its era to affirm a married woman's right to her own individuality. It remains one of the most controversial plays about love and marriage ever written, and still retains the power to shock an audience a century after its lead character opened a door to freedom.

A DOLL'S LIFE: the musical has book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, music by Larry Grossman and is directed by Steven Carl McCasland and musical directed by Jeremy Robin Lyons. Set within the framework of a contemporary rehearsal of Henrik Ibsen's classic play A Doll's Life, the musical addresses the question of what might have transpired after Nora slammed the door and abandoned her tyrannical husband Torvald. Borrowing the fare from a young violinist, Otto, she takes the train to Christiania, where she accepts work in a cafe and soon becomes tangled in the lives of several men. Throughout the show, scenes in her new life mingle with intermittent flashbacks to the one she left behind. This production marks only the third time the production has seen a New York stage since 1982.

About the Company: The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective

The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective was founded in the summer of 2010 by its Artistic Director, Steven Carl McCasland. McCasland, who founded Group Therapy Productions while a student at Pace University, has been directing in New York (Medea, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Antigone, Death of a Salesman, Hamlet, and others) since 2005.

Beautiful Soup uses theater to bring to light our own struggles and create a dialog. Exploring new works and classics in innovative ways, stretching a shoe-string budget to create visually enchanting minimalist productions, the Collective honors a different charitable organization with each production. Often using the themes of the play or musical to select the benficiary, a portion of funds raised at the box office are donated to the chosen charity.

While serving the community, the Soup strives to bring light to all types of theater, new and old. Each season, the Collective presents:
-one revival of a "lost" play
-one revival of a "lost" musical
-one classical play (typically Shakespearean or Greek)
-one play (comedy or drama) written after 1960 OR one new play
-one production for all ages

Previous productions include: the criticaly acclaimed world premiere play neat & tidy, the first New York revival of A Doll's Life which ran in repertory with Ibsen's A Doll's House,BLACK [Billy Learns About Captain Kirk] & BLUE, William Shakespeare's HamletCrossing Brooklyn: a musical by Jenny Giering and Laura Harrington, The WSXR Players' Present Their June 7, 1944 Broadcast of William Shakespeare's TWELFTH NIGHT, or What You Will and Steven Carl McCasland's world premiere play, Alice Au Pays Des Merveilles (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland).

Theater can be for the masses if we let it. With The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective, you can return to your roots and explore the boundaries of theater while continuing to serve your community. Learn more at www.beautifulsouptheatercollective.org.
