ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

Genre: Drama
Written by Stephen Gracia, Directed by Michael LoPorto

“Absolute Beginners” examines the lives of three young men raised within the ranks of the Westies, Hell’s Kitchen’s notorious Irish mob. The play centers on the strained relationships between two brothers and their childhood friend who are drawn together by a murder that threatens the survival of the crime organization. While deciding how to cover up the murder, the motives of the characters are uncovered. These three men have all grown up in the same family tradition of violence, and their lives have taken very different paths as as result.

Set in a neighborhood that today boasts upscale eateries and the Baryshnikov Arts Center, the play recalls the recent, violent past of Hell’s Kitchen, a neighborhood with Irish shantytown roots stretching back to the 19th century. The play is a slice-of-life drama that explores the inner conflicts and subjective moralities of the Westies as they begin to lose their grip on New York City.
