June 13, 2010 at the Brecht Forum, NYC
“The Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble merges music, theater, improvisation, and structured composition into a total multi-media experience – a ‘happening’ in which art leaps off the wall and into the seat next to us.” Asbury Park Press
NEW YORK, June 13, 2010 –THE STRIKE ANYWHERE PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLE uses its final !!FreEpLaY!! of the ’09-’10 season to riff off of the Sophocles classic, Antigone. SA’s interdisciplinary ensemble of world-class jazz musicians, modern dancers, and actors will be joined on stage by immigrant youth from Manhattan International High School. Students will perform modern adaptations of key scenes and the ensemble will improvise off of the material in a style dubbed “3D-Jazz”. Strike Anywhere is performing its 4th year-long residency at the school for recent immigrants where it partners closely with classroom teachers to improve students' communication skills. The night will be a passionate cry for rebellion, for being heard, and for finding one's voice. The evening is part of The 9.13 Project an International Theatre Festival at The Brecht Forum (June 9-20) designed to respond to Fox News Host, Glenn Beck’s attacks on the Brecht Forum.

Established in 1997 by Artistic Director, Leese Walker, STRIKE ANYWHERE is a permanent ensemble of world-class jazz musicians, modern dancers, and actors. Known for their use of SOUNDPAINTING, the live composing sign language, the ensemble creates art in the moment, allowing intuition, the sounds of the room and audience suggestion to shape what they play. Performers collaborate through an improvisational process to create politically-charged, original works that address socially-relevant issues. Strike Anywhere has toured extensively. The company has been featured on Radio France, NPR, WBAI and German Public Radio and has appeared at: B.A.M., American Airlines Theater, The Irondale Center, The Zipper Factory, P.S. 122, St. Clements, Theatre for the New City, Galapagos, and HERE Arts Center.
"A totally unpredictable and sometimes telepathically linked mixture of
gesture, dance and theater, set to music also improvised on the spot." -Brooklyn Skyline
