CELLULOID

Genre: Musical
Earl Lewin and Dick Durham

It's Philadelphia in the 1970's and things aren't looking so good for Motion Picture Arts, a small film company. Newer technologies are taking over and celluloid film production is on the brink of extinction.
But MPA's owner, Jack Hudson, will never give up on scoring the "Big One" to revive his faltering company.  Unusual schemes and humorous setbacks abound while Jack's faithful employees' personal tragedies and love affairs evolve around him, creating a story that "reaches out to a more reflective level of human feeling."
A superb musical score oozes cool, swinging jazz rhythms, and complex harmonies weave in and out of a story of eternal optimism, tragic loss and newfound love.

Celluloid, a musical comedy with book and lyrics by Earl Lewin and music by Dick Durham, premiered at The Church Hill Theatre in Maryland in 2006 to critical acclaim. The cast of this New York production includes Tim Mullally, Katie Iacona, Rhonda Jensen, Joel Cardona, Mark Epperson, Ben Prayz, Matthew Cowan, Bob Brower, George Golden and Rick Dettwyler.

Lewin is a published playwright, and has authored and directed a number of dinner theater musicals and has numerous directing and acting credits to his name. He has been an adjunct professor of film at Rowan University. This is Lewin's first New York production.

Award winning jazz pianist/ composer/ arranger Dick Durham has been playing
standard jazz for 45 years.  He has performed or worked in conjunction with such notables as Count Basie, Grover Washington and Stefan Scaggiari. This is the second collaboration for Durham and Lewin who teamed up in 2004 to produce a musical version of "She Stoops To Conquer".

Celluloid is directed by Earl Lewin with musical direction by Dick Durham.  Music is
performed by The Dick Durham Trio with Durham on piano, Bob Offerman on bass and David Hoffman on drums.
