It's 1938 in Monroe County Florida, and the minimum wage is just being introduced. Joshua Poole decides to build a home for his aging parents but first, he needs a copy of his deed and the approval of the local government. He's told, he must take a test. A test based on "Jim Crow Laws" and Poole, unable to read sees little hope in obtaining what is rightfully his until a stranger, who goes by the name of Reading Man, comes to his aid. A community steeped in superstition may block the only person who can help Poole, when Henrietta, a Hoodoo Priestess, challenges the newcomer!
