Genre: Drama
by Heinar Kipphardt, directed by Carl Forsman

At the height of the McCarthy era, Oppenheimer (the father of the atom bomb) is charged with being a Communist sympathizer and showing insufficient enthusiasm for the hydrogen bomb program. He attempts to retain his security clearance in a trial designed to bring down the
most important opponent of America's ambitious nuclear weapons program.

In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer is a docu-drama based on the transcripts of Oppenheimer's 1954 Atomic Energy Commission Security Clearance Review. The subject of the recent Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus, Oppenheimer is one of the most complicated figures of the 20th Century. In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer was originally produced by Lincoln Center in 1968.
