By AJ Wraath and of course, William Shakespeare, directed by W. Allen Wrede
Winter mixes key scenes from Shakespeare's late romance The Winter's Tale with a contemporary love story. In Shakespeare's play King Leontes accuses Queen Hermione of adultery and despite no evidence to support this, he sends his family, his kingdom and himself into a downward spiral into tragedy. In the modern story, Leonard and Helen fall in love despite his unstable behavior. Panicked after Helen becomes pregnant, Leonard jilts her, ends their relationship and goes on a drinking binge. He visits an old friend to inquire about his baby to find that the baby is a mystery – did the baby even really exist? Where redemption in Shakespeare's romance is a reality, in it's contemporary counterpart, redemption may be just a fantasy.
