Genre: Drama
Conceived and directed by Jon Stancato, Scenario and text written by Kiran Rikhye

A World Premiere, freely inspired by the Victor Hugo novel of the same name. A band of gypsies kidnaps a gentle boy and surgically disfigures his face into a permanent smile. He finds his way into the wagon of a lovely misanthropic itinerant performer who adopts him and a blind foundling girl he has discovered in his travels. As the children age, they fall in love and join their father on stage, gaining fame and fortune in their roles as clown an ingénue. They live happily together, but when their performances command the attention of a debauched Duchess, her lust for the deformed clown threatens to tear the family apart. Presented by Horse Trade Theatre Company

Music composed and performed by Emily Otto

About the Company: Stolen Chair Theatre Company

STOLEN CHAIR Named best “genre-bending theatre” by New York Press, Stolen Chair is a theatre laboratory dedicated to the creation of playfully intellectual, wickedly irreverent, and exuberantly athletic original works. Proudly plundering the pop culture of the past half millennium, Stolen Chair’s aesthetically promiscuous work recycles and reinvents old genres and stories to discover new ways to challenge and delight contemporary audiences. Pioneer of the Community Supported Theatre movement, Stolen Chair is supported, in part, by the Nancy Quinn Fund and by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts.
