A Lie of the Mind is a story of two American families set against a backdrop of dysfunction and dark humor. The rifts and fusion of Shepard's eight colorful characters correspond brilliantly with contemporary concerns like broken dreams, financial woes, even a divided America. The sheer – and sometimes bleak -- humanity of the play transcends time. Shepard himself described Lie as "a love ballad...a little legend about love."
