The groundbreaking musical explores how one suburban family copes with crisis. With powerful lyrics and an electrifying pop-rock score of more than 30 songs, this intense, emotional and ultimately hopeful musical aims right for the heart with its story of a family coming to terms with its past and bravely facing its future. Musically Human is the first company to produce the show in New York City following its long Broadway run and National Tour.
"It's a deep exploration of pain, sorrow and love with no easy out or Hollywood ending, but ultimately it is a hopeful story," said Director David Norwood. "I knew when we decided to do this show, that an African-American actress had to play Diana," Norwood continues. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, many African American women do not seek treatment for depression or mental illness because it is viewed as a personal weakness, not a health problem. Only 12 percent of African American women seek help and/or treatment.
In addition to winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010, Next to Normal was nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards® and won three; Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley.
Next to Normal features a creative team that includes Joseph Croghan (scenic design), Michael O'Connor (lighting design), Jacob Subotnick (Sound Design) and Michael Starobin & Tom Kitt (orchestrations).
