Once upon a time, way back in the idealistic 1960's, a children's puppet theatre was born. It was the brainchild of an extraordinary woman, Sandra Robbins, who Sandra Robbins and childrendreamed of using light, color and sound to profoundly touch the creative self within each child. Her dream was realized in The Shadow Box Theatre.

For over three decades, this remarkable children's service organization has sustained and built upon her dream. The multi-ethnic troupe and their musical puppet plays have brought love, laughter, joy and affirmation to over two million children. Today, SBT is recognized as one of New York City's major arts resources. It is an award-winning non-profit repertory company dedicated to providing relevant, top-quality children's entertainment.

Big Annie (an American Tall Tale)  | Open: 12/11/12 Close: 12/21/12
In its fifth decade, the award-winning children’s musical puppet theatre, The Shadow Box Theatre, presents Big Annie --  a joyous Holiday Sing-Along celebrating Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa and Three Kings Day.  This story stars Big Annie, a Creole flatboat captain and larger-than-life American heroine! With her amazing strength, and the help of her animal friends, she pulls a boatload of toys through a terrible storm one Christmas Eve long ago. Our storyteller and guitarist capture the rhythm and power of the American work song as the kids join in singing to help Big Annie succeed.  Big Annie is recommended for children ages 3 - 7.

Little Is Big & Sing Out For Peace  | Open: 04/11/10 Close: 05/09/10
In LITTLE IS BIG & SING OUT FOR PEACE, book, music, lyrics as well as original songs in "Sing" written by SANDRA ROBBINS and puppet show concept originally co-created with HAZEL FROUD, the vitality of diversity comes to life in this inspiring show. In an enchanted landscape deep beneath the sea, the little fish Spinny and his friends face up to a big bully of a fish and find courage, tolerance and the true meaning of friendship. At the conclusion they - and the children - learn to envision a more peaceful world. Following the puppet show, the audience joins in a stirring "Sing." There are wonderful original songs like "Many Colors" and "Same Inside" as well as international songs that speak to the hearts and minds of the audience about how, when we work together "Hand in Hand,! " we can create a peaceful world. 

The production is 55 minutes and is appropriate for children through 2nd grade.

Lumpy Bumpy Pumpkin  | Open: 10/18/11 Close: 10/29/11
Lumpy Bumpy Pumpkin is an original tale that, like the ugly duckling, is about someone different who finds acceptance. With comedy, compassion, and plenty of pumpkins, this Halloween story will soon have everyone singing along and rooting for Lumpy Bumpy Pumpkin. Along with Lumpy Bumpy, we learn that everyone has a special talent - you just have to find it! The spirit and energy of our storyteller and guitarist help bring Farmer Joe's pumpkin patch to life. The show includes a rousing Halloween Sing-Along.

Cast: 4 performers, including 3 puppeteers and guitarist

Recommended: Early childhood to 2nd grade

A celebration of multicultural sharing for African-American History Month! Come listen to the wit, wisdom and humor of The African Drum as it reveals How The Turtle Got Its Shell and two more African folk tales – woven into the shadow puppet adventures of the little girl Kijana and her animal friends.  Recommended for pre-K to 5th grade

The Firefly Star  | Open: 12/13/11 Close: 01/05/12

The Shadow Box Theatre presents "The Firefly Star: a Hispanic Tale for Three Kings Day," a magical story of El Dia de los Reyes (January 6th) – and how one year it almost didn't happen!  But the holiday is saved by the clever little mouse Raton Perez, and his ladybug friend Senora Margarita.  Our storyteller and guitarist use puppets and a rich mix of Spanish and medieval songs and music to celebrate the Hispanic folk tradition.

Recommended for ages 3 – 7 years old.
