Movimiento Escénico de las Américas / Performing Arts Movement of the Americas  | Open: 09/25/08 Close: 09/27/08
A UNIQUE EVENT
Movimiento Escénico de las Américas (Performing Arts Movement of the Americas), referred to as MEDLAM, is an innovative event in which dance as an art form calls upon other expressions of the performing arts to convene in the same forum to foster a public dialogue. Dance as the main link, joins theater, music, and poetry.

Movimiento Escénico de las Américas (MEDLAM) is a unique gathering of local, national and international artists sharing with New Yorkers the cultural richness of the Americas.

OUR MISSION
Movimiento Escénico de las Américas' mission is to promote the arts, culture and diversity of the Americas, primarily of Latin America, while providing a platform for emerging and well known artists to exchange their work and talent with New York City audiences.

THE FIRST EDITION
In 2008, Movimiento Escénico de las Américas (MEDLAM) celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of dance, theater, music, video and poetry performances by artists representing Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the United States.

This first edition of MEDLAM will present dance performances by Alexandra Beller; Julieta Valero / Rastro Dance Company; Dayana Hernández, Francisco Espinoza and Elliot Ortiz / D.10 Project. It also includes performances by actor Nelson Pérez / Teatro Professional Lara, poet and actor Ygor Zamora and a one woman musical by Rosateresa Castro Vargas.

Every nite of the event, MEDLAM will feature a dance performance together with a theatrical, musical or poetry presentation. The public will enjoy a double feature for a single price of admission each night.

PERFORMANCES SYNOPSIS

Thursday, September 25 / jueves 25 de septiembre

us - Alexandra Beller Dances
A solo performed without intermission. A hybrid form of performance art using text, song, virtuosic dance, and original sound design, "us" attempts to excuse itself from genre classification by using different mediums to tell it like it is. There is both seeringly literal ideology (as in text where Bush explains the elimination of reproductive rights as essential for a compassionate culture) and rampantly metaphorical (as when a mop is used in place of a gay partner for a love duet). Humor is used to engage and disarm the audience, and pathos to elicit an open heart and mind.

The ultimate goal is to create a space where the issues can be looked at as human decisions rather than legislative rules and where the experience of being a citizen can be examined as a life rather than a political model.

SOLILOQUIO EN NEGRO TENAZ - Teatro Profesional Lara

An experimental one-woman musical
A woman reminisces about drinking coffee with the women of her family in Puerto Rico while she is seating in an imaginary coffee bar in New York City. Her reverie takes her back to happy memories as well to the family secrets that include child molestation.

Saturday, September 27 / sábado 27 de septiembre

Hosco mundo - recital de poesía - Ygor Zamora
(this performance will be presented in Spanish)

Hosco mundo (written in 2007) reflects different episodes and experiences in Zamora's metaphoric and visionary Hispanic world. Using his poetry, Zamora talks to his audience about this dreamed context, skillfully exposing confrontations, issues and truths with a bitter sweet taste.

(critic Teresa Novo).

Latidos de Memoria / Beats of Memory - Dayana Hernández

Originally, this choreography was created by Elliot Ortiz for Danza 10, during the dramatic events of Vargas (Venezuelan coast). The premier of this piece was in France in 2001. Using improvisations and body expression, the dancers create a diversity of phrases over clay. Dayana and Elliot developed a new version to celebrate the 16th anniversary of Danza 10 (Venezuela) in New York City.

Vidas Prestadas / Borrowed Lives - Elliot Ortiz / D.10 Project
(Ygor Zamora).

Borrowed Lives, depicts the different perceptions of a hallucinatory journey into other's territory...(the other self?) ...and is other the territory that I breathe and is other the life that I do not have." (Ygor Zamora).
