In the 1905 immigrant community of Lower Manhattan, Esther, an African-American seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews exquisite lingerie for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. Surprisingly independent for her time she is willing to risk it all for a man she barely knows. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. At the same time also vying for Esther's attention is Mr. Marks the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth, but the impossibility of such a match is obvious to them both. Sheila Simmons directs and stars in Lynn Nottage's classic story of American immigration.
