FEBRAURY 20. 2007, New York, NY— The calla lilies will be blooming again as the perennially dramatic and delightful comedy Stage Door is presented in an Equity-approved showcase by The Theatre Fellowship of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church for 8 performances at the church's Kenneth O. Jones Auditorium, located at 7 West 55th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues in Midtown Manhattan. This production opens on Thursday, March 8 at 7:00 pm with subsequent evening performances again at 7 pm Thursday through Saturday, March 8 – 17 and with Sunday matinees on March 11 and 18 at 2 pm. Tickets are $15 available for the public through SmartTix at www.smarttix.com
A classic example of the warm humor and humanism of its authors, George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, Stage Door, opens into the many dreams and desires of aspiring actresses who seek fame, fortune or at the very least room and board in 1936 New York against the backdrop of the Great Depression. Even as the play highlights the dramas of a few key characters, it remains essentially an ensemble piece populated with the colorful personalities who characterize the best of Kaufman and Ferber's work.
One New York reviewer described the play's first production: "as funny and enjoyable and loving an evening's theater as anyone could possibly want." This revival will offer audiences the same opportunity to enjoy the delights and drama of one of the classic comedies about theater as life and life as theater.
The play's director, Leah Averre, says: "The last play I directed was Two on an Island with a cast of 11, after which I said I'm only doing 4-person play. But I always loved Stage Door. The play is as relevant today as it was when it was first produced. Struggling for integrity in the face of adversity. Choosing to be a part of something more complicated but rewarding than choosing money or fame. Today theater tends to be box-office driven and often does not seem to created to share a message or move an audience. The latter is what my colleagues and I truly want to accomplish with this production of Stage Door, so bring on the cast of 24!"
The Theatre Fellowship of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church was organized in 1997 for people in the church and community to pursue their mutual interests and talents in the theater. Each production is an Off-Off Broadway Actors' Equity Association Showcase. Stage Door marks the group's 9th production.
An Actors' Equity Association-approved showcase produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
