The Revenger's Tragedy, written just a few years after Hamlet, is a pot-boiling pastiche of the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Set in a corrupt and mythical Venice, the protagonist Vindice (Matthew Rauch) vows revenge on the salacious Duke who murdered his fiancée. This sets off a chain reaction of vengeance through which Vindice wreaks gleeful havoc on the city, exposing the court's outrageous indulgences and government hypocrisy, ending in a coup de théâtre massacre of epic proportions.
The Revenger's Tragedy is a searing examination of the precarious balance between the need for justice and the desire for vengeance. This Jacobean masterpiece will be receiving its first major presentation in New York City in nearly 20 years. Part black comedy, part social satire, the play is full of humorous macabre turns, and more plot-twists than a blender full of Shakespeare's greatest hits. It's a roller-coaster ride through a Jacobean house of horrors as Shakespearean characters swirl around you and the play catapults you through a Venice you never dreamed existed. Fellini, Coppola and Tarantino meet Shakespeare and the results are incendiary.
