A Modern Opus with Southern Charm
NEW YORK, NY, April 11, 2008 - On May 9th, 2008, Legends, Myths and Hieroglyphs, a new play by filmmaker Demetrius Wren, will take its first steps with the guidance of Mainspring Collective as the first leg of their new "Square One Series."
Set in a small town in northern Mississippi, the story is told through the wild imagination of a young boy, as he tries to make sense of the world around him without the guidance of a father. His grandmother, after enduring decades of tragedy, tries to hold her failing family together as she enters the twilight of her life. Told in three acts, the audience experiences the zeitgeist of the play - the decline of the black American family fabric.
When asked why he took a step away from film to write this whimsical tragedy, Wren shared, "I've always been drawn to theater that held a bit of magic in its characters, set design, and way of unraveling the story. Unlike most film, theater isn't about recreating reality. It's more than that. It's the way we wish we could see it coupled with the power of our imagination."
Mainspring Collective, a New York based theater company who opened its doors last summer with a creative 1950's adaptation of Euripides' Medea, now continues with its latest effort, the Square One Series. This new project is commited to ensemble collaboration, working with fresh voices that will shape the next generation of live performance and theater.
Mainspring Collective resides at the Producer's Club on West 44th Street and 9th Avenue. Legends, Myths and Hieroglyphs will run from May 9th to May 13th. For more information, show times, and ticket sales please visit us at: www.mainspringcollective.com.
