A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM  | Open: 12/06/18 Close: 12/16/18
Director Jonathan Emerson’s modern fairytale design borrows from both Western and Eastern oral storytelling traditions to transport audiences alongside our young lovers (and everyone’s favorite Athenian community theater troupe), to a dark fantasy forest. The mortal and the faery worlds collide in the twilight realm as Oberon and Titania fight, the dazzle of their Faeries sparkle bright, and one and all are spellbound by the shenanigans of a certain merry wanderer of the night. Join us as we explore the ways in which an epic story can remind us of where we’ve come from, teach us, and sometimes ultimately…save us.

Production History

Arsenic And Old Lace  | Open: 02/26/09 Close: 03/08/09
Queens Shakespeare Inc. presents Joseph Kesselring's classic comedy/thriller/farce revolving around Mortimer Brewster, a theater-hating drama critic who must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and local police in Brooklyn, NY, as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves. His family includes two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of home-made elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and "just a pinch" of cyanide; a brother who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar of the Brewster home (which then serve as graves for the aunts' victims); and a murderous brother who has received plastic surgery performed by an alcoholic accomplice, Dr. Einstein to conceal his identity and now looks like horror-film actor Boris Karloff.

GODSPELL  | Open: 06/28/18 Close: 07/07/18
Director Christina Sheehan’s modern revolutionary inspired design explores a diverse group with many modern voices of resistance who come together with one visionary leader to form a community, and ultimately learn how to make their own “light” shine. This popular musical retelling of the Gospel of Matthew brings its messages of kindness, tolerance and love vibrantly to life.

We invite you to join the tribe, as they work together in the hope of building their…Beautiful City.

ROBIN HOOD  | Open: 06/29/17 Close: 07/08/17
Following up our successful run of The Terrible Tragedy of Peter Pan and King Lear, Queens Shakespeare and What Dreams May Co are pleased to present Larry Blamire’s Robin Hood. Join us for a summer of shield maidens, sheriffs, princes and a prince among thieves…Oh and did we mention swords. Lots and lots of swords.

Director Christina Sheehan’s fantasy inspired design transports audiences to an England at war with itself, gallivanting through a Sherwood Forest that serves as the dual playground battlefield where Robin and his Merry Men defy tyranny.  This sprawling, action-packed retelling of the Robin Hood story gives us characters that challenge and reinvent the myth including a Maid Marian with a sword who can do her own saving, a female Little John who is as quick witted as she is quick with her quarter staff, and several other cross-gendered casting scenarios which elevate the stakes of both the conflict and the comedy in a script by Larry Blamire that walks the line between The Adventures of Robin Hood and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Together these characters will stand against the power of King John and the Sherriff of Nottingham. Through this lens we will explore what it means to “fight cruelty where you find it”, that “Even the smallest light shines in the darkness.”, and that those who “can stand up, will stand up.” “We’re not one, we’re many. When heroes stand together…work together, not a power in all of England can stop us.”

Twelfth Night  | Open: 06/17/09 Close: 06/27/09
Queens Shakespeare makes its Manhattan debut with an encore engagement of it acclaimed production of William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy classic TWELFTH NIGHT. Directed by Nanette Ozias Asher, performances begin June 17 at The Flea Theater in Tribeca.

One of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, TWELFTH NIGHT tells the story of Viola, a young woman shipwrecked in the country of Illyria who chooses to go incognito as a boy eunuch. She comes to serve the lovesick Count Orsino in his courtship of Lady Olivia, who instead falls for the fetching young go-between. This sets a series of events into motion that creates a tangled knot of romance and confusion that only time and fortuitous appearances can untie. Along the way, we meet Sir Toby Belch, Feste, and other riotous court characters, as well as that officious steward, Malvolio. With raucous antics, ravishing language and rich characters, Shakespeare creates a bittersweet tale of laughter and longing.

Asher’s straight-forward production stars Greg Mocker, Jonathan Emerson, Brandan Hunt, Rachel Crouthamel, Lindsey Larkin, Danny Makalil Mittermeyer, Adam Gallinant, Nathaniel Vaky, Zack Locuson, Viktoria Papayani, Rachel Marcus, David Wescott, Jeremy Patrick Hamilton and Anne Roser with set & lighting by Jonathan Emerson, graphic design by Greg Mocker, costumes & stage management by Tara Schmitt, and music by Justin Asher.
